how does our parking brake adjust?
« on: October 09, 2009, 02:11:50 PM »
so I have the car about 45000 miles and wondered why the parking brake never seemed to self adjust but no worries for me it was still effective, just more travel then when I got the car

then bing, all of a sudden it adjusted and it is back down to factory travel, any idea what's going on here?

how does our parking brake adjust when you have manual transmission, is it done in reverse?...do I need to pull the brake at any specific time while doeing something else?

thanx for the info in advance

I believe there is a ratchet in the e-brake mechanism at the calipers. Apparently there was enough travel to advance a tooth in the ratchet.

Pull off the center console, at the end of the brake cable, tighten the bolt facing aft. You need a deepwell 10mm or a 10mm rachet wrench.

To remove the center console, pull the parking brake up then lift from the back section (just in front of the rear cupholders) and once released, slide afte and lift over the parking brake.   Then lower the parking brake handle and tighten the bolt

The brakes are self adjusting, the option Joe offers in to tighten the cable.

Critter, correct but Deep's talking about the OTHER adjustment. The cable can/does stretch. For some reason my calipers don't seem to adjust correctly or the cable has a problem and I actually had to install a few washers at the handle end of the cable to take up enough slack to be able to adjust it properly. Works fine now.

Somewhere on the BB theres a tutorial on how to adjust it.

When my parking brake went it was actually a problem with the rear caliper neeing to be recompressed.   I got it done under warranty but its something to look at.

To adjust the back rachet you hold the p/brake button in and jack it up and down quickly and that should do it took me hour to find out how. seal9
