Recommendations on a car cover
« on: October 25, 2009, 10:58:23 PM »
Well its about time to put the Kappa up for the winter so I figured I would ask others for their opinion on car covers.  My car will be kept in a garage out of the elements and if I am working out in the garage then it will also be heated.  I have another car that I am working on restoring so chances are good that I will be working out there quite a bit.  My biggest concern will be to keep dust off the Sol and to protect it from any other items that maybe stirred up while I work on the other car.

In the past I have had one of those cheep covers that you can buy at the local auto store.  I used it on another car that needed to be repainted, that car has since given up its spot in the garage to the GXP.  I was not impressed with the cheep cover and have no intention of using something like that on the GXP, I think it could actually do more damage then good.

So I would like peoples input on what type of material that they have used and why, along with what brand of car cover and where they purchased it.  If there are any supporting vendors that have a product now is your chance to let those of us that didn't know, know about it.  I would prefer a cover that is fitted to the Kappas and not some generic one size fits almost all except for what I intend to use it on.  If there is something else that I should be aware of about car covers speak up.

Really if it's garage kept and heated then even the cheap ones will do fine since it will be out of the Wind, Rain, Snow, Sun and just really there to keep dust or any fallout from your car restoration off the Sol.
Now if it's going to be outdoors THATS A DIFFERENT STORY you should invest in a good quality cover since then the wind could cause the cover to put light scratches on the vehicle since at time the cover will kind of move in the wind.  A good cover will also allow the moisture to escape from under the cover as well as have a UV blocker to prevent the cover from turning to shreds if left out in the Sun.
Just my .02 though.

I won't use one of those cheep covers on anything with decent paint.  Even though The GXP will be in the garage it will be exposed to wind anytime that I open or close the door when I use my daily driver.  The wind around here tends to be pretty fierce.  No joke I have hurricane strut bracing on my garage door.  I decided to upgrade the bracing because the winds bowed the hell out of my brand new double wall foam core door in less then 6 months.

I have been looking at a flannel cover but I have also see some sort of man made material such as Weathershield.  Anyone have any experience with these?

Man you guys get some nasty wind up there.
My garage hardly ever gets wind directly to it so for me a cheap cover works fine of course I also strap that cover tight so it doesn't move at all.
Though around hear during the summer there is alot of dust and grit/bugs in the air so driving during the Summer months wrecks havoc on the paint.
Just the way it is somethings always going to ware at your vehicle.   I put over 12K on my Sol since Feb and still looks real good but even washing your vehicle puts scratches in your paint unless your in a dust free environment.  I just wax my vehicle ever month to keep it as slick as possible and hope it helps.  Seems to work.

I use the Form-Fit Indoor Car cover.  The outer shell is polyester & spandex, the interior is cotton terry cloth.  7.4 oz total material.  You also have a choice of colors.  Expensive but worth the money in my opinion.
