Hard Tops?
« on: October 31, 2009, 08:49:59 AM »
Hey everybody, I've been trying to find a hard top (fiberglass or carbon fiber, don't really care) so I can clear up the trunk for some future plans I may be going after.  I haven't been able to track any down. I have a rag top, and while it is nice to drop it every now and then, it isn't something I really care for.  I'd rather stick a hard top on it and rip out that forming material for when the top is stored.  (Is that even possible? As far as I can tell there isn't anything under there is there?)  Does anyone have a northstar here?  I need a direction to go hunting in.

Bad news... the gas tank is under there.

It can be moved if you have a straight pipe and get rid of the muffler...

Well, that won't completly ruin my plans, but it will force me to adjust them a bit.  I can work around it but it will make things a lot harder.

Why not just trade up to a coupe if you don't want a vert?

The problem with the hardtops is that you can't open the trunk with the top on.  It makes the trunk totally useless.

It is really to bad they never came out with the one where you could open the trunk.
I know there were a few people that would have bought that one.

That's because everyone still wants the stupid wings coming off the top. Someone needs to just man up, chop the buttresses off the hardtops and be done with it. It doesn't look that bad, and hey presto, problem solved.

I was thinking over taking a reciprocating saw to the wings, sanding them down and mounting them onto some hinges.  I'm trying to do some things to the car that I haven't seen too commonly and I'm thinking of relocating/installing some stuff back there.  I didn't go with the coupe for other reasons and I don't want to mount the hardtop permanently, still want to be abel to take it off to appease the wife.

Sounds like one of the SCCA CF tops, which means no window seals, and it's designed to be attached to a roll cage.

The problem with the hardtops is that you can't open the trunk with the top on.  It makes the trunk totally useless.

As if with the soft top stowed in the trunk you could even put anything in there if the hard top allowed it.  If you removed the soft top and ever had to reinstall it that would be a total pain in the ass, it would probably be a major pain just to remove it.

I think it would be cold if the hard top and the trunk could be open as one piece.
