Left door locking problem
« on: November 11, 2009, 05:05:47 PM »
My driver door lock stopped working a week ago also. I don't have vertical doors.
The door is locking with the key in the doorhandle only but it doesn't:
- with the remote control
- when I start moving my car (the passenger door locks)
- when I press the lock interior button (the passenger door locks)

You had same behavior?
I hate to drive my car to the dealership, still I don't know what should I do, go there or go to a shop.

Kelu that is exactly what my car was doing. If you haven't messed with the wiring harness take it to the dealer. The wire was broken just after it comes out of the plug on in the fender well going to th door. Let us know what you find.

I didn't messed with the wiring in the drivers door. I did install a viper alarm under the steering wheel.

Did I mentioned that  I hate to drive it to the dealership  :gaah: . I have to use a buddy which is a service manager at the dealership, I have to stay there some hours to be sure someone is working on it, because if I leave it there probably will be 1-3 days to have this fixed, I have to bribe around which could cost me more than going a shop. Also the Opel dealership have null expertise about my car, see the experiences with my only visit to the dealership:

I haven't had that issue with wiring on my Solstice but I had a  door speaker quit working on my Chevy Equinox and when investigating found a broken wire in the same spot you have on your car.  It was at the flex point where the wire goes from the door to the body of the vehicle. I fixed it myself (no warranty left).

I found it interesting that I mentioned this to my neighbour over coffee who just retired from GM and he said that was a common issue.  The plastic insulation was cheap on the wiring harnesses, very inflexible and got worse with age ,   then  broke at bend points which  allowed the copper to open up as well.  So wires do just break and its not uncommon with GM vehicles.

I hate taking my vehicles into dealerships, you have to watch them like a hawk, question their moves and take no chances. Isn't it nice to have someone like DDM to deal with.  :yay:

This is what makes me really sad about my dealership closing due to the whole GM deal.
The service department is really fair and competent.

There are so many with tools like the one you went to, that it really makes you appreciate the good ones and this good one is being forced to close

You don't even want to ask me the problem I had with a Viper alarm system and things not working...things such as the ENTIRE CAR!  I will let someone who was at MM5 explain that one.  I was too busy stressing that I would not get home from maryland, until Dave and Randy from DDM spent all day working on it and fixed it.  I would have been screwed if it wasn't for them.  This car does NOT like aftermarket security systems.  It ended up being the HVAC fuse, which is tied into the security system.

I have the best viper model for more than 3-4 months, no problems at all up to now. The installation was done on module (i don't know hot to explain), without hot wiring something nasty, that's why they didn't allow me to have remote start engine or remote/auto power windows, the shop wanted to keep it 100% safe to avoid any problems on my going to the dealership.

All the sudden after 3-4 months only driver door doesn't lock, I went to the alarm shop and they said they can remove the door face and look around but 95% something broken there and is not the alarm because they would fix it. They offered to try to fix for free even the problem was on the car system because I sent them other clients also they talked to the dealership to avoid any accusation which the Opel guys can make. Still I'm making myself courage to go there.

this problem appeared on some greek GT too. it seems it is a malfunction from the factroy.
"clever" greek service guys found the following solution

on the passenger's side, under the dash, there is a set of fuses. they pulled them out for 5 minutes, plugged them again in and it works...untill the next time...lol..

Removing fuse no.26 for 5 minutes didn't worked.
Also removed the door face and couldn't spot any unplugged plug or any suspicious broken wire. That leaves me to suspect only the device unlocking the lock. :(

So I repeat:

The door is locking with the key in the doorhandle only but it doesn't:
- with the remote control (the passenger door locks)
- when I start moving my car (the passenger door locks)
- when I press the lock interior button (the passenger door locks)
(all from above it is involving power lock, I listen carefully and no sound in drivers door when I engage it)
- when I push the small lock knob nothing happens

Tried greek solution removing the fuse, removed interior face to check for any loose contacts or bad wires, noting. If there will be problems with the wires the right door wouldn't work on pressing the driver interior button.

A seller from BB is telling he has free shipping and I might jump on this.

So narrowed my search to power lock from driver's door. Am I wrong?

P.S. This became too off topic, can someone split and make a new topic with my case, please?

No sir, I checked when I removed the door face.
Even if the pin cable would be off, the power lock should work (when using the fob, the interior lock button, or auto locking when I move the car), right ?

Kelu, there is a plug in the fender that connects all the wiring in the door. Find a wiring schematic. Take the Plug loose and apply 12 volts to the pin for the door lock. If it doesn't actuate take the insulation off the harness and look for a broken wire. That is exactly the way my car did. You are not getting power to the lock.

DickW: pushing the lock button from interior from the driver's door was locking your right door?

I know you already told me about this case, but I assumed IF the locking from the left door locks the right door that is not a wire problem.

No Kelu. The only way the door would lock was with the key. I think you are not getting 12 volts to the door locking mechanism. My problem was a broken wire in the harness.

One additional question: Locking with the key in from outside of the drivers door, should close both doors? To me is locking only drivers door.

Who installed your viper alarm system?  They are required to cut one of the door lock circuits to install the device.  It's possible a wire came loose.

The viper alarm was installed to a viper dealer. First time when this happened I visited them, they judged based on how this issue manifest that is not  because the alarm or a wire which they touched.

I remember they worked under the steering wheel, but no on the door.

Try locking it twice, 1st time should lock the left door, 2nd time may lock the right.  A lot of new cars do that not sure about ours

Click 1 time locks both doors   2 clicks unlocks 1st is drivers door   2nd  unlocks passenger door. If the GT is the same thaqts the way the locks work.
