New Cupholder - Please provide input
« on: January 18, 2010, 05:49:10 PM »
I don't see an option to post a poll, so I'll do this the old fashion way.  We're in the process of developing a new cupholder for the sol/sky that will fit on other car models as well.  It's meant to be a convenience of course but, I want to make something that has a performance aspect to it.  Basically, stick your drink in there and it won't move or wobble.  To do this, I need to know how everyone is using their current cupholders in regards to size only.  Our cupholder is going to be a bolt on option that is out of the way and has four potential mounting positions so I don't need any feedback for placement.

Post up if you normally drink from cans, bottles, and what size they are (can size, medium, extra large).  My personal preference is a can size that will fit the can snugly or a 16oz water/beverage bottle.  However, I've noticed that there are a lot of big gulp drivers around.  So, if you can post up the following:

1. what do you drink often in your car (soda, water, coffee from a thermos, etc) and what container does it come in.
2. Do you feel the depth of the stock cupholder is sufficient or does it need to be deeper.  If you want it deeper, I need to know if you must have it deeper or if the stock depth works ok.  Believe it or not, this is one of the harder things to change.

Thanks.

-Joe

I use the cup holder on the passangers side every morning for a travel coffee cup.  It is a Snap=On mug/thermos whatever people prefer.  Only thing lacking in the current design is a broader base, the little plastic beam if you will tends to have the thermos wobble back and forth a little.  I think it also has to do with the fact on the thermos the Snap On S sticks out a little.  A little more depth would be nice, but if I can't put a can in there, I have my waterfall cup holder still, so no biggie.

Love to have this!

I generally use fast food cups in mine - from small coffee to medium drinks (20oz) very rarely anything larger. The stock (front) cupholder is OK, but could be deeper by up to maybe 1/2 inch.

20 oz. plastic bottles & 12 oz. cans.  Stock passenger side cupholder is not deep enough.

Insulated reusable travel coffee cup, I have the Santana replacement and it is no where near deep enough cup flops around. I have t o keep an eye on it so it won't fall out. Like this one, they are cheap and I was thinking about doing a KP version.

At present, I'm using my Benz cupholders. :D

But in my Solstice, I use the passenger side one a lot. It was replaced at Mecca III with a factory one.

I use it every morning to hold my large coffee from Dunkin Donuts.  I find that the OEM cup holder has stability issues with water bottles such as Aquafina, etc.  If it doesn't fit snug, it wobbles.  Also, the large styrofoam cups that delis use to put their homemade iced tea in (the largest one) does not even fit into this cup holder.

I don't drink in my car. There is duct tape covering my cupholder so it doesn't pop out mistakenly :)

Sometimes I drink before driving, so if you have a device that can help me out there to keep me out of trouble that would be great ! ;)

I stopped buying Vitamin Water because the bottles don't fit in the factory cupholder.  Ditto on the Venti Starbucks cup!

20 oz Vitamin Water bottles. They fit in my passenger cupholder just fine. However they are a hair too big for the waterfall cuphoder, they need to be wiggled to get in & out.

And don't buy that exotic square water bottle. That thing definitely won't fit. Ask Morf.

I really like chocolate milk can we get one that will hold a half gallon, would that be a problem. For now I strap it in the seat and use a really long straw. This can be a problem when I am trying to eat a large pizza and a meatball sub at the same time.

20 oz. 7-Eleven coffee or 20 oz. Coke bottles.  Some times 32 oz. foam cups.
