I wonder how much effect the fact that we are 7 short of a 1000 users has on the site?  I'm fairly certain we aren't all on at the same time.

Sorry, it's just frustrating. I know I'm  :bdh: but this is the only Solstice forum I'm a member of but I do visit the other forums  & they don't seem to have this problem. Would more donations help maybe, to get a better site provider  :idk:  I like this forum & don't care to be a member of multiple forums, I don't see the point.

Guys, I know there is a problem and I have to get a bit smarter (research and understanding on the specifications) on Virtual Private Server (VPS) before I change.  I don't want to spend a bunch of money, move the site and have it be worse or down.  Please be patient.    I have a full time job to attend to also.

I've managed several web sites over the years, with several search engines, so yes finding a good host is important. The best option of course is a private server but this can be very expensive. I've paid $450 per month for a rack shack server that was very fast but this was an unmanaged server. A managed server is even more expensive.

I use hostgator as a host now and have used them for about 3 years. I have been happy with them and their pricing. I'm sure they have VPS for rent.

You also can increase your bandwidth or ask your host to move you to a different server with a faster processor.

Moving a site and the database also can be a big issue as different hosts use different MySql databases versions and transferring data can be an issue. Some hosts will move your site for you.

Good luck with your move.

That's true John, I remember that as well. I didn't get into it until I could get a 1200 baud modem though. 1200 baud was SMOKIN'!

Joe, it's getting worse, not better.  I'm thinking that the provider is selling you down the river, you paid for higher concurrency and the service got worse!  You should at least get that money back as your first step, and then start (continue) :censor: ing at them.  Do that before you start thinking about migrating to another provider and all the headaches THAT will cause!

I'm guessing that they are having some kind of server problems and either don't realise it or are slow-pedalling.  Either that or (/and) they've sold too much space on their server(s).

Just my 2c.  If you need help to complain, or for anything else, just shout.

I think you're right Tomatosoup.  They are trying to force me to purchase a better service.  I'm done with Go-Daddy.

I'll checkinto the hostgator site also.  Thanks for that info.

Bob,
All these young kids who want instant gratification.  I can remember reading a newspaper while downloading a file on a 300 baud modem.

My first PC was an IBM 8086 with TWO 5 1/4 floppies and 8 KB (you K) of memory. It was 1981 and it was EX PEN SIVE.

What I'm observing is a latency problem.  From the time you click on a message 'til that requested page stars to load can be a long time,  any where from almost immediate to as much as 2 or 3 minutes,  meanwhile Firefox informs me "Waiting for KappaPerformance.com to respond", or something very similar.  Once the page starts loading, it's darn near instantaneous.

I only have an intermitten problem, most of the time it is smoking, in comparison to my 300 baud modem.

Bob, I  went to a 14.4 and and then to a 56k modem.

My first PC was an IBM 8086 with TWO 5 1/4 floppies and 8 KB (you K) of memory. It was 1981 and it was EX PEN SIVE.

One of those was plunked down on my desk with pirated software and I was told to figure it out.  And it took a bit, but I did.  I remember the floppy shuffle well.

But do you remember the big Radio Shack floppies?  Those were huge!

Floppies? My friend had a Commodore 64 with cassette drive. That's how he loaded the games. Took forever!

This site is hit or miss on the mobile version.
