That right there is at LEAST an 1000ft drop in elevation.  Flagstaff sits right around 7000ft and Sedona is at 4400ft.  The drive along the way will take you past Slide Rock National Park along with some great hiking. 

However, if you ever get the chance to drive it, I'd suggest starting at AZ-179 and driving north to get to Sedona.  That's where you get the great views of the red rocks.  Theres a bit of construction just south of the main town, but other than that it is a splendid drive.  Next time I run it, I'll grab some video

That is such a great stretch of road!! We've been in our truck, because the times we've been in the area it was for mountain biking. It's still a blast in the truck but we always say, "How awesome would this be top down in the roadster!" I agree with Vanguard's starting point.

BTW, if you're in the area, do yourself a favor and get yourself off of the road for an adventure, whether on foot or on a bike. It is truly awe inspiring!

One thing to note...about 80% of the time I get stuck behind really slow drivers.  Unfortunately, there are only 4-5 LEGAL places to pass or turn-off.

Hey everyone, I drove the road south down the mountain and took a video of it...its about 13 minutes in 1080p...and it looks great!  Turn down your sound just a little bit because the wind noise is a bit rough...but not too much so you can hear my RPi downpipe and exhaust during WOT 

And yes, I know I passed where I shouldn't have a few times

Vanguard, thanks for the geat post.  I have fond memories of that road.  It was a thrill for me to re-live the drive that you posted as well.  It is surely one of the most scenic drives in the great state of Arizona.  Raised both my sons in Arizona.  Carol and I purchased our first new car in Tucson, Arizona.  It was a 1974 Brown Honda Civic S/W and that dude was driven all over the state.  If you ever get to Arizona take this road that Vanguard posted as it is awesome!  Believe me you will enjoy it.  You mention hiking, Arizona has a great park system and the Northern part of the state near Flagstaff is gorgeous.  If you get a chance to vacation there, do it!
