Topic: Wet trunk

So, Streak has been parked for a few weeks. Plumbing issue needed be fixed, and was. Riding mower bent a couple push rods on the left cylinder (Briggs & Straton quality strikes!!) and needed first a repair, and then a head. Garage door opener decided to go British on me and worked when it wanted. Had to fix THAT. Various other things were failing as fast as I could fix them, but I got all caught up and decided to pay a little attention to Streak. Various this's and that's to get ready for a Solo this weekend. And then I opened the trunk.   Did I mention the car was outside? No? Did I mention it's been raining more than a little? No?   It has been seriously wet for weeks in the KC area. 

So, after I removed the trunk liner (if you ever do this, be careful as it is a paper product ... REALLY) I sponged out a couple of cups of standing water. Before people ask, the four vent tubes (2 little ones at the rear corners of the roof and 2 big ones to capture what slips past the seal on the front of the trunk lid) are completely clear and not pinched. The liner is laying in the sun to dry out and the trunk is open to completely air out. I have an XM/Onstar antenna and factory spoiler.

Any clues as the likely leak points? I plan on using a water hose to see where the leaks may be. So, who has had a leak issue resolved and what was the problem?

Do you have someone that will fit in the trunk while you hose it down?  Could you please include a pic of that?

Any chance water can get in around the latch for the "wings"?  With the amount of rain you have had, could water have pooled up near the back window if parked on a slope?  The drain at the back over the lic. plate?  Is that the same as the ones you mentioned?

Were your buttresses down?  If not, those holes are good candidates.

I had an issue where I had removed/replaced the trunk lid bellows-tube rubber molding to thread through wires for my lid LEDs.  Didn't quite have it pushed down tight properly at the bottom on the floor of the hinge-shelf/cubby.  Next time I washed my car -- wet trunk.  So check that - especially if you've ever had it out.

Trunk monkey is too big and besides, he ate my camera
Buttresses were down and locked
All drain hoses were in place - securely
Water was collected at rear window - but that should have drained through the drain hoses if it got past the gasket/seal
The trunk lid liner was not wet
Not sure about the tray at the back of the trunk lid

Parked nose down?   standing water gathered at the back window between the humps?

Osmossis.  The top absorbes the water and it then passes through into the trunk.  Dozen reports of this happening.  The car is usually sitting for a day or longer with the nose lower than the tail, and water gathers between the hump and passes through the top into the trunk.

See if Chuckdoc will help you out by climbing in the trunk, you might have to put a phone book in there for him to stand on so that he can reach the manual release handle.

One day last summer I found a wet trunk. It was wet only in the back, driver's side corner, and there was probably a half-cup of water standing under the liner. The lid liner was not wet. There was no sign of water in any part of the front of the trunk.

I took out the liner, dried everything and put it back together.

The car has been out in hard rain numerous times since then. Not a drop in the trunk.

Nope. Must have been the "parked nose done in the rain" syndrome.

the portion material below the glass has to have spacers in it so if you parked in that manner, the water draining into the trunk is channeled to the tubes on either side.  Over time they become compressed and the small wedges become dislodged.  Make sure the spacing is still there.

Early model Kappas had firm foam blocks that were glued in place. Unbelievable, but true. These blocks easily came loose, fell down into the pouch, and eventually would block the drain. I guess GM figured out how stupid THAT was and changed to plastic stand offs that keep the pouch open. I have the latter. Still don't know (for sure) what the problem is, but I DO know what I will NOT be doing with Streak in the future ---------- parking it nose down in the rain !!!!!!

I hope that most of the Kappa design people will not get to Bowling Green !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     (Steve P. is one exception.)
