HUD (head up display) mod questions
« on: July 05, 2010, 08:33:06 PM »
I have always thought that GM should have offered a HUD for our Kappas.  Its a mod that I would like to have and have been doing a little looking to see what was available.  One of the things that I found was this e-bay action for a system for the Corvette.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/C6-Corvette-Heads-Up-Display-HUD-Kit-2005-Up-NEW-PARTS-/300426830632?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45f2d5a328

So my questions start with, has anyone any experience with these systems on the vette?  Are these an OBD port hook up that we might be able to adapt to our cars?  If not how do they get the system inputs that they display and how tough would it be to adapt to our Kappas?  Has anyone else looked into a HUD if so what have you found?

I don't have any experience with HUDs, but a co-worker is a vette nut. Since I've wanted a HUD as well I asked him what was involved...Basically, not would you need the HUD unit but also the windshield from a HUD-equipped vette, they're treated to better reflect the green light of the HUD. Without that treatment the HUD is very dim and hard to see. So, while do-able it may be a bit more involved.

If you can make it work though I'd love to hear about it though, and I wish you luck. Would be a really cool thing to have.

There are a few after market add ons that I have seen and to deal with the windshield reflection issue they come with a film that you put on the windshield like a window tint.  So I don't think that will be a deal breaker as of yet.

I've had HUD in both my Vettes and never used so I shut them off. If you drive a manual transmission your used to looking down at the tachometers anyway.

You will not be able to tie a C5/C6 HUD as they run off the BCM. Best look for one that plugs into the OBD2 port.

Thats kind of the whole point of the HUD so that you don't have to look down.  With the instruments on our Kappas being at the end of tunnels they sometimes aren't easy to see.  So it would be nice if the information could just be projected out in front of us, and if we could add a few more items to display that would be the icing on the cake.

Subject: RE: C6 Corvette Heads Up Display HUD Kit 2005&Up NEW PARTS

Joe,

Thanks for the email. To start, we have never put on in a Solstice, so I don't know for certain whether it would work or not. To answer a few items in the thread about the Vettes;
Although the C6 does come from the factory with a special "HUD" windshield, it is not needed for operation.. We have done literally 100's of these with the standard windshield, and they work fine.
The body control module in all C6's are the same, HUD or not, so the function is already programmed into ever C6 Corvette. This is how we are able to make this a plug and play function. Being that the Solstice wasn't offered with a HUD, the essential programming in the BCM isn't there to operate the display.

Hope this helps, or maybe makes things as clear as mud :). As you saw, we are on Ebay

Sincerely,
Kevin Cassimore

Thats kind of what I had suspected since there didn't appear to be any black box driving the projector.  So then the next question would have to be what would we need to do to create something like a dash hawk that would get info from the OBD port and then feed that to a display?  I don't know enough about BCMs to know if they actually process some sort of discreet signal for the HUD or if they just have the means to split info that would go to normal displays and data ports and it also supply that to the HUD.  I guess thats maybe more of a question of how is the HUD driven?
