Message: "Check Fuel Cap"
« on: October 31, 2010, 08:54:53 PM »
I had the message "Check Fuel Cap" (or similar wording) yesterday for the first time, in the driver info screen.  I pulled over, checked the stock fuel cap (it was tight - I had used a half a tank or so since my last fueling), the message did not go out immediately - I had to scroll through all info screens to get back to the one I was originally using.  Has been fine ever since.

Any idea what would have prompted this message (if cap was tight)?

Anyone else have this happen?

Did you replace it with another stock cap, or did you try an aftermarket one?

Don't top off when you fill, it can ruin the gas cap

Topping the gas tank up when filling can ruin a lot more than the gas cap. Flooding the evap system with raw gas can foul the system.

The gas caps are cheap, generally about $10 and the aftermarket ones from my experience are the same as the OEM ones just in different packaging.

Just trying to do my part...

Maybe that's my problem but I don't think I top off as much as I go to the next multiple of 5 in the cents column. I may just replace mine to see if it makes a difference, but I doubt it will.
