Help with repairing 12v power plug/cigerette plug adaptor
« on: November 19, 2010, 06:46:28 PM »
I was wondering if anyone knew how to repair the 12v power plug/cigerette plug adaptor.
If so, what would be the steps I would need to take to repair it.
If not, does the wire that leads to the 12v plug/(cigerette plug) go along the wire pack that is under the arm-rest and emergency brake lever.

what's broken about it?  Could it just be the fuse?

Are you talking about the socket that's part of the car, or a plug for an accessory?  Sounds like you mean the socket.  I'm also going to guess you mean there's no power to it.  If both of those assumptions are correct, then GJ's suggestion is the best.  Start with the fuse.

I'm 99% certain that the wire to the power outlet/socket does NOT run through the harness under the arm rest.

Yes the wire comes forward from under the dash.  If the fuse is OK, it could be the connector at the back of the socket that's worked loose.  (Or someone's had the boomerang off and forgotten to plug the connector back on - cough - don't ask.)

The fuse is fine, I think that the connection worked itself loose on the plug.  I was wondering what are the steps i need to take to fix it.

You can first try to look-see by popping-off the chrome shifter trim-ring (around the shift boot).  VERY GENTLY, pry up the trim ring at the bottom and sides (work back and forth around the ring) with something like a plastic putty knife, or even your fingernails.  NOTE: don't mar the trim paint, and go CAREFULLY - it's easy to break off the clip tabs on the trim ring.

Once unclipped, pull the ring and boot up over the shift knob, then feel or look in the space around behind the 12V socket to see if the connector's loose or off.  If it is, and you can't work it back on with just the trim ring off, then post back for directions on lifting the boomerang.

I think i was able to push the connection back on because it looks like it is working now. :D I think I may have an excuse to go to mod meet 8 :yay: to help me take it apart that section to permanently fix the plug.
The chrome ring was easy to take off. I shifted the gear into neutral and lifted the chrome ring up by putting my fingers into the shift boot and pulling the bottom of the ring through the leather slightly in towards the shifter and slowly pulling the trim up.

Great! Good job.  Getting the Boomerang off is pretty easy, the trim ring is the worst part!  Be good to see you at MM8 though.
