Topic: Door speaker measurements question.

Since I dont have a solstice right now, Im wondering if someone can help me out if them have this information available.

Im looking to see if the window, when all the way down, goes behind the speaker. If so, what is the clearance depth from the sheetmetal of the door to the window? Also what the opening size is when the stock speaker housing is removed.? I understand that there is a notch out of the bottom and a off-shape at the top, just looking for a estimate of the diameter on the circular portion of it. Thanks

They are 6 1/2's I have very large Image Dynamics installed without an issue, depth should not be an issue.

Goat, your magnets are probably just missing the window mount.  Not that there's anything *wrong* with that.  If memory serves, I took those measurements at the shallowest point on the edge of the hole's circumference.  

To the OP, I agree w/ Goat.  There's plenty of room for some hefty speakers.  If you're pushing it, ultimately you won't know until you try them.  Don't let the mounting depth keep you from getting the set you want.  Buy 'em and try 'em.

Thanks for the replies and pictures. Im just trying to get an idea for now as I may be end up using a set of 3-ways with as large of a woofer I can fit and sealing the doors best I could since there isnt much room for a decent subwoofer without looking totally out of place.

Don't fall in the bigger is better trap, it is POWER that makes bass not the size of the woofer, my 6 1/2's make a LOT of bass over 80hz the doors shake and they are damped, the mirrors bounce, but they are getting a solid 150 watts to each and another 150 to the huge tweeters, I have to boost the signal from the headunit to the amp to get the full 150. It is the quailty not the size, I have used other larger speakers that were much cheaper they sucked. There is a reason Image Dynamics keeps winning the world championships, but they are EXPENSIVE!

A three way system would be nice but in our small cars not sure you need it and that you would not end up with hot spots, where would you put the mid's? I just have a single shallow 10" sub in the factory location and it thumps. I plan on swapping the MB Quart for an Image Dynamics that will be deeper and require and very custom box in the spring, I spoke with ID on which 10" to use the 500 watts I have now should be plenty.

Goat...update us on your install as you change things...which sub did they recommend? I was looking at the Alpine Type-R Shallow sub, but it hits down to 28hz...I am fearing that the 20-28hz range that it doesn't get down to will make a difference.  

I was thinking of using the Alpine PDX5 amplifier...and bridging the 75x4 into 150x2, and then running the 300w 5th channel to a sub and not using rear speakers.

Spikey much stuff below 100 Hz starts to get below the threshold of human hearing.  I wuldn't worry about the 20-30 hz stuff. You only really fell that, not so much hear it.  I have been considering a few stereo upgrades myself.



Focal 165krx3 6 3/4" 3 way system.  comes with a 3" midrange driver tweeter and door speaker.  I was thinking this would be a great way to replace the crappy 3 1/2 "rear" speaker.  Only problem is these babies are $$$$.  And they require a 4 channel amp to drive all 6 speakers properly (BI-amp low and mids)

Also waiting for the release of Stereo Integrity's BM mkIV (Should be out this spring).  Very reasonable 12" thin sub that can take a licking (this will be an update to their already releases (but no longer available) BM mkIII:

Those components look fantastic...always been a fan of Focal speakers....the price is nuts though....the flat sub looks real nice...specs look right around where we need them...what does that sub run?

If you're after "pure" sound (i.e. you're an audiophile), if you can distinctly hear the bass, it's too loud and you have an imbalanced system.  If you are simply into artificial 'bang' (and I don't mean that negatively - it's your choice) then the louder and 'hummier' and more panel-shaking, the better.  Not really an age thing.

I'm none of the above,  I like to hear highs and lows and don't mind an occasional bang as long as it is crisp and doesn't hang around afterwards.

I have never used 3-ways before and was looking to try them out and/or design a set myself. My biggest worry is finding a class ab 4channel that i think i will like. My eclipse ive been using since '01 has seen its days and since they went down the crapper in recent years, I cant rely on them anymore. Ive been eyeballing the Boston Acoustics GT-5750 5ch for some time now so i dont hato worry about a seperate sub amp. Plus Id be able to use the rear channel to biamp the 3-ways or have 2-ways run off the front with smaller softdome mids higher in the dash ran off the rear channels. Ive always used a center channel to bring the sound up without having to do alot of imaging and tweaking with the door speakers.

and old goat, what head areyou using? i dont like the wording "boosting the signal from the headunit". to me that sound like turning the loudness (another word for distortion) on or cranking the setting on the eq. Ive always ran flat or negative eq, no loudness and a head with voltage preouts no less than 4v. Plus because a speaker is expensive doesnt mean its good and a cheap speaker can be made to sound like a million bucks when used in a proper manner. Ive eaten my words many times when I predecide what something is going to soundlike just because its cheap. Smething I wont skimp on is the headunit and amps. I would first spend $3k on a radio and amplifiers before I even thought about spending that on speakers. But thats just me and its been working so far.

Plus, has anyone checked out the Earthquake SWS subs? They make them in 8", 10" 12" an are pretty thin too.
