What year would NA you buy to drop in a V8?
« on: January 13, 2011, 12:02:18 PM »
Just like the title says, if you decided to buy used non-aspirated manually equipped Sol, what year would you focus on if you hoped to someday use it for a V8 conversion (any other must have options)?  I'm thinking 08s mainly due to a lot of differrential issues threads that have been posted on the 06s & 07s.

non-aspirated?   How about Normally-Aspirated?   (Kick me, 'cuz I screwed it up too  :idk: )

Anyway, I would look for an '09 NA, since stabilitrack was standard, and I think it's a nice feature to have for everyday driving with a V-8 and gobs of horsepower.  Second would be an '08 with the stabilitrack option installed, for the same reason.

i believe the correct term is naturally aspirated.
i would say a 09, since most infant problems are solved in these models.
but if you are looking at a V8 conversion, i would say a 07 or 08 to get lower price, since you won't be needing the engine and tranny and ECM will be reprogrammed

I wouldn't get the 08 since the vacuum assist for the brakes was removed on that model.  I think the 07s came with stabilitrac but it would have to be a 07 build date after Nov 06 so it would have the door locks and adjustable drivers seat.

Any year Sky as they actually started making them in the spring 2006. That what mine is and is very well put together.

The RedLines and GXPs had stabilitrac standard in 07. the NAs didn't get it standard until 09, and it was optional in 08.

Joe, no power lift or door locks on my 04/2006 build.

Funny my 05 GTO did not have door locks or outside temperature. :)

I do think all Sky's came with acoustic headliner.

'07 since you will be out of the "problem" phase, but also slower price end. Who need stabilitrac? I run mine without it and love it even in the winter.

A base with LSD is what I have. The V8 loads up differently and is much easier to control in the wet, snow, and autocross.

Hi there!

My '06 would be a good candidate since it has everything except Monsoon, and the top has the pieces on it to keep the pinching problem at bay that later ('07? '08?) tops didn't seem to have.  Then again, no power height adjustment on the seat and power locks but no button.  Any of that is easy enough to fix so it wouldn't keep me from buying one year over another.

I'm not sure how easy it is to get traction control working on a V8 swap (does it use the PCM for some of that feature?), but if it does work then it may be worth buying a car that has it.

The biggest differences between the '06 and newer NA is the transmission gear ratios in the manual (which makes me want to find an '07 transmission...) and the rear end clunk that was fixed with the additional brace.  Does that brace stay in place if you swap to a V8 trans?  If you're keeping the Kappa transmission (which I don't think is a good idea from a torque-handling view) then an '07 or newer would be a good plan.
