Intruder's Audio System Install
« on: January 19, 2011, 10:22:43 PM »
After an extensive amount of research, as well as speaking with some very well-versed people in the car audio world, I have made the decision on the components for my audio system upgrade.  A special thanks goes out to Joe from JPM Coachworks for his advice, my installer Jon Dome, and Travis(cartmann32 from SF) for his advice and really hooking me up with tremendous prices on these higher end components.  I have done a ton of researching on the audiophile forums, and decided that this setup will suit both my needs in terms of SQ (sound quality) and the limitations of the Solstice interior size.  Here's what I plan on doing:

I will be replacing the entire Monsoon system.  The door enclosures will soon house the Hybrid Audio Technologies Legatia Series L6 Midbass Driver.  The Legatia series competes and has beaten the Focal Utopia and high end Morel components.  For anyone that knows car audio, that is really impressive.  The tweeter will be replaced by their Legatia series 1" silk dome.

Hybrid Audio Technologies Legatia Series: Check Them Out!
http://hybrid-audio.com/products.htm

I will also be using their Legatia series Passive Crossovers.  If you read about them, you will be quite impressed...they use only high end materials and ensure that the proper frequencies reach each speaker.

As for the subwoofer, we will be adapting the Memphis Car Audio S Class 10" dual 4ohm voice coil Subwoofer into the stock box...we may just ditch the box altogether and build a new one just for the sub.

Check them out here: http://www.memphiscaraudio.com/products/subwoofers/sclass-subwoofers/

For the amplification, I will be using two of the newest Arc Audio products.  They just released a MINI series of amplifiers that are potent, clean, and fit in small spaces.  They will be mounted behind the drivers seat on the rear wall, with a custom frame around them which will be visible if the seat is moved forward.  For the front channels, I will be using the KS125.4 MINI and the subwoofer will be powered by the KS500.1 MINI.  These amps are extremely small, so they will be mounted either one above the other, or side by side.

You can see those amps here:
http://www.arcaudio.com/amps.asp

I am very excited, as this will be one of the cleanest sounding systems around when the tuning is all done on it and the speakers are broken in.  I am going for a completely SQ (sound quality) system, not one of the highest SPL.  I will not be using any rear speakers, as they are unnecessary and will not make a difference.  The important thing is that the installation is done correctly and the signal to each speaker is powerful and clean.  My installer did my last show quality build in my old Mazda6, which I displayed at Hot Import Nights at Shea Stadium for the Air Force booth.  I will keep you posted as the build progresses.

Good choices. That Memphis sub looks just like the JL shallow subs.

Can't wait to hear this.

This is great intel. Can you share what the $ was to go this route? Can you post some ideas of what the new set up will look like. I've often thought of putting something better, but my monsoon system actually work pretty; just wish is it was louder and cleaner. Really like the OnStar and XM

I don't know the "real" cost of all this...I am getting a killer deal from one of the members on the SF.  As far as I have seen online, the Hybrid Legatia L6 midbass speakers go for $450-$550 a pair, the crossovers are $250 a pair, the tweeters are $150-$215 a pair, the Memphis sub can be had for approximately $160-$225, and the Arc Audio MINI KS500.1 is about $500 and the MINI KS125.4 is about $515.  I am not paying near this...just got a killer deal and researching these components finalized the decision.  My installer is putting everything in for $300, and $400 if he has to build a box for the sub.  From my experience, this is a steal for an install like this.

I ordered it all tonight!!  I am so excited to get it...I will take pics of everything when it comes.

The speakers are going in place of the stock ones in the doors and A pillars.  The amps are really small, so they are going to be mounted on the wall behind the drivers seat...probably going to cut the plastic and expose the top of the amps and make a nice frame around it.  That will allow the amps to cool better also.  The sub is going in place of the stock sub.  We think it will fit in the stock box, and if not, then we will use the stock enclosure area and build a small box in there.  Fitment shouldn't be too much of an issue.

The Arc Audio MINI KS125.4 is small, measuring only 11.6"x5.15"x1.7"
The Arc Audio MINI KS500.1 is also small, measuring the exact same as the one above.

Thanks so much...I have been reading more and more reviews on the audiophile boards and they are all good and being compared with the Morel Supremo's, which I have heard and are amazing sounding.

No difference at all.
Just new year, new model number/name.
Memphis was all out of the SClass woofers, meaning they stopped making them and renamed the labels with MR.
Same exact woofer....new hotness

Steve,
You won't need to cut and glass the back part as shown above....there is plenty of room in there for a min. of .36 cu.ft....but, as always....the more air space the better for subs.....as long as you stay within recommended specs.

I'm showing
0.35 min/0.75 optimum in a sealed enclosure
1.25 / 45 hz / 10.5 x 1.25 x 18.5 (port) in a ported enclosure
Ported enclosure prolly not going to happen in our car

Never had the Monsoon system....so I have no clue.
Take yours out and fill it full of the smallest, consistance objects you can get your hands on.
Beanbag stuffing works great.
Then, once full, pour into a cardboard box (pre-measured and marked, prolly .25-1.0 cu/ft marks) and you'll know where you're at.
Then don't forget to subtract the displacement of the woofer magnet/basket...which isn't much.
I don't have that spec, as it'll be on the box and no on the website currently.

Looks good so far.

Make sure you dry it out 110% if you use water........water is the best method...but more of a PITA in the long run..
