With some transportation help to trailer it down & a hand with the swap out from some very special friends & some cost savings help from Dave at DDM (THANK YOU!!!), he says we can swap out the motor over a weekend for one that he will have prepped & ready.
I have allready selected & paid for the new parts to go in the motor, just waiting for the pistons to come in... they are custom order. A little more cash when we go down to finish paying for it all, some greasy knuckles, beer, pizza, gas & a hotel room & it should be good to go!

As for what's being done:
-I will be retaining the stage II SC system on the new motor but will be adding a high flow cat (found that the internals of the stock one is cracked down the center).
Machine shop work
-motor disassembly & build
-block cleaned
-ecotec master build kit
-Diamond Racing pistons with ceramic coated tops & slick side skirts
-K1 rods
-crank balanced & polished
-head cleaned, shaved & multi-angle valve job (will be retaining stock valves & springs due to limited RPM's by auto trans - not needed)
-Cometic head gasket

She should be better than before & good to go for MORE POWAHHH in the future!

Jimmy, did the stock cat clog and cause a buildup of pressure causing your rings to fail?

It doesn't look clogged just cracked. I'll have to wait untill we get the car on the lift to get it all the way off to tell for sure.

U-238, not 100% sure until the motor comes out & the head gets removed but I think it was rings/piston related.

That's great news Jimmy!!!!
now your motor will be bullet proof and the most important is that the job will be carried by DDM who know perfectly well what they are doing!!!
and why wait for more power in the future??? go SC III now that you will have your motor rebuilt!!

pls let us know what the failure was and what you speculate may have caused it.

Great news about getting fixed by DDM, I would love to come and give a hand when you need, I'm not too much of a mechanic but you could put Critter on my shoulders so the rest of the team to be free from his supervisor attention.

Jimmy, have you considered that DBGXP may have had something to do with your engine failure? You know you did kick his butt on the strip. I would keep a close eye on him.

All, I don't have a date yet, waiting on the pistons to come in. I'll let you know as soon as Dave contacts me that they are in... should be a couple more weeks.

I will post what we find with the old motor when we get it out.

Update, pics of cracked cat. Disregard light colored areas, that's where I disturbed the carbon poking arround.
Not sure if this had anything to do with the engine failure or not.

Intake or exhaust side? I don't know if that would have any effect tho. I still have my old cat in the shed if you aren't going hi-flow.

If this hasn't to do anything with the engine failure, then it's a hell of a coincidence!!!
could this be a result of the engine failure?
i surely don't think this is a possible cause, maybe just a result

Entrance (manifold side), I haven't taken it off yet to see the exit side, I'll wait to get it to DDM since you have to get under the car to get it off.

I think at this point since this happened I will go ahead with a high flow cat & deal with the noise.

Arabas, that what I was thinking. Maybe the rush of cooler oil on the hot cat cracked it.

Very interesting... I am glad I just got a "new" SOLO Hi Flow CAT that just needs to get installed. Should be interesting as the disassembly comes as to the real culprit for the CAT/engine failure.

If the cat became clogged, the pressure would have caused the rings to blow buy. That has to be the inlet portion of the cat as it appears to still be installed on the exhaust

I asked K1 technologies If the had rods for LE5, they answered me as following:

Tom Molnar said that it would be about 1k for pistons and rods, a lot cheapper that winseco pinstons and carillo rods.

Does Dave told you something about your k1 rods? Im really looking foward to buy from them

Agreed,

I would like to do a future LE5 motor upgrade similar to Jimmy's. Can we get some input from DDM (Dave) on what is required for this "rebuild" at approximate cost including parts/labor and time for the overhaul?

This would definitely be an option for LE5's down the road to go for BIG POWER prior to blowing engines. I know the LE5 can withstand a lot of internal torque, but given the option to do an engine "upgrade" prior to a large upgrade, some of us may want to go down this path.
