New Gunmetal wheels are now installed!
« on: April 26, 2011, 11:17:24 PM »
I'm pumped. First the turbo cover that worked out better than I had hoped and now the wheels are ready to go. I have to get over to the powder coaters in the next day or so to pick them up now. The colour is Gunmetal Steel Pearlescent with a semi-gloss clear.

With the red calipers, the OZ centre caps and the chrome lug nuts, they are going to look SO good on the car! I can't wait to install them.

Looks awesome!  That is about what I was going for with mine when I painted them, just more metallic.  They ended up darker though...and on a different vehicle!   :o

That was exactly why I went this way Craig. The powder coat is tougher than paint and if I do mark them up, it's back to Don for a quick recoat. I have a very small amount of curb rash on one of my chrome rims and it always bugged me that I couldn't fix it. I liked the look of the chrome and they were easy to maintain but I wouldn't get them again. That was the reason I didn't get a wheel with a polished lip either. I think I'm certifiable.

If it does happen again, it's an easy fix.

Thanks for the pictures JoshMcMadMac and Megas, they look great!

Thanks, I have them at home now and next week I'll have to go get them installed. They look better than in the pictures and unlike when they were new from OZ all the surfaces are painted (powder coated).

I picked up the car today and had the wheels installed at the same time. As IBDRINKEN said, they look SO purty on the car.

Here's the wheels. ALMOST had some damage on the car when the installer went to jack the front of the car behind the front wheel. I stopped him before he could do it and he got a little bent out of shape because he thought that I was telling him how to do his job.

I showed him my BMW jacking pucks and told him that if he jacked it there the whole side of the car would lift, ad that there wouldn't be any damage. He was okay after that and was REALLY careful with the car and the wheels. Hand torqued everything as well.

Here's the final result.

Although it's not sunny today, they REALLY look sharp in the sun.

Great wheels, exactly what i was thinking of some time ago, much lighter than our stock ones. These oz are 18'' right? Can you please tell where you got them from?

Yeah, they're 18" OZ Ultralegerra's and 8lbs less per corner. I bought them at Tirerack some time ago. They were on sale at the time, they were clearing the black ones out at $59 a wheel but they only had 3. When I went on the TiireRack site that morning, you never saw anyone type that fast as I wanted to make sure I snagged them at that price. They only had 2 at first but they found a third one when the scoured their database. As 3 wheels wasn't going to cut it, I had to get a silver one at full price.

Tirerack in effect paid for the powder coating and I still came out ahead of the game. I wasn't sure what colour to get at first but the gunmetal is really starting to grow on me.

I was just wondering if wheels and tires are an after-thought with some car makers. It seems that the first years have really plain Jane stuff and then they start coming up with some good designs. The wheels are nice on the Solstice, but there were really very few options. Chrome, painted, aluminum, that was it. The one wheel design that I liked, they stopped making right away and only a few people got their hands on them. Also, it seems like the new tires they put on, wear down much faster than the after market tires.
