Kenwood Nav Install
« on: May 08, 2011, 10:24:46 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm installing a Kenwood DNX6160 nav unit into my car. Everything went swimmingly save for one step. I turned up the potentimeter on the GMOS LAN harness for a 2007 Saturn Sky but now the door chimes/signal light are far too loud. As per the GMOS LAN instructions I removed the lower shunt jumper next to the 14 pin harness but this didn't affect the volume at all. Or so I think. I wasn't entirely sure what the shunt jumper was. On the harness there are the 4 prongs stacked 2x2 and the top two are connected with a plastic sheath as are the bottom two. So I just removed the lower black plastic piece from the 2 prongs. Was this right? If it was, then how else can I turn down the chimes?

Assuming the above makes sense if anyone can help I'd be greatly appreciative.

Thanks =)

not sure about the shunt but can't you just reverse the POT on the harness.  I also know that there is a wire that you tap to ground to adjust the volume, I think it's blue and green.

Pretty sure on the GMOS module that I bought that the "adjust the volume by grounding this wire" trick was to change the onstar volume. There were two pots, one was a preamp gain, the other was the door chime/turn signal volume.

The best way to solve this would probably be to call Axxess tech support. Once I got the volume of my system to where I wanted it I was able to bring the volume of the chimes down, but it's still louder than I would have liked. I'm used to it now and I don't give it a thought.

There are 2 jumpers, the bottom one controls the chimes volume and the top jumper controls the audible turn signal. I believe I removed both.

The wire that you tap to ground for the Onstar volume is the black/yellow. Alternately you can install a 10K potentiometer between this wire and ground.

I got mine as low as possible, and it's still freaking annoying.

It's one of the things you have to deal with.
On the converse side, if you don't add a relay, you will no longer have the turn signal ticking.
it does chime if you don't turn them off after about 1 minute though.

Awesome thanks guys. Sounds like I may just have to stick it out, but next time I have the dash apart I'll call tech support and see if they have any suggestions. Atleast I'm not the only one with loud chimes =P

At least I'm not the only one with loud chimes =P

Yeah, you get used to it. The only alternative that I could see is to turn the pot on the interface down but then you have to crank the radio to 30 to get any appreciable volume out of it. If you get any answers from tech support, let us know.
