12 Volt power outlet
« on: September 04, 2011, 12:27:39 PM »
   Hello all I have a question I am not getting power to my 12 volt power outlet on the dash. And I was thinking I may have blown a fuse. And I would like know where this fuse is located at and how it is marked. And what amp it is? And if the fuse is good what else might keep it from working?
  Also I am looking far a small air compresser to keep in my Solstice.What do ya'll recommend?

                                      Thanks

There is a Fuse block in the passengers well floorboard. I have the air compressor that came with the car that is in the trunk. Since I have the Smoothline top on it, I can't get in the trunk. At one point I had it behind the passengers seat.

The fuse should be number 30, 20A, in the underhood block near the battery. There is a picture with location in the owner manual.

As Buzzardt mentioned, there is a fuse block in the passenger floot well area.  You will have to pull back the carpet, which will be velcroed to a corrugated plastic panel.  And on the back of that panel will be a key/legend for the fuse block, which is behind that plastic panel.

By the way, there is also a second fuse block in the engine bay.  It is covered by a simple black plastic cover just above the battery.

Your cigarette lighter/power supply should be on the fuse block in the passenger footwell.  But if for some reason, everything seems ok in that fuse block, it couldn't hurt to check the one under the hood.

Also, have you had any work done on your interior recently?  Say a stereo install or something like that?  Because that power supply has to be disconnected to get in behind the panels.  And it's quite common for an installer to forget to plug that power supply back in while reassembling.

Well work your way backwards.  Take a multi-tester and check for continuity in the fuse.  I've been fooled visually by fuses multiple times, and now I don't believe the fuse is still intact unless I test it for continuity.  If that's a go.  Then check for 12V at the fuse socket.  Then check for 12V at the wires leading to the 12V outlet.  Then the socket for the 12V itself.

   I checked the fuse by the battery and it was good. The only thing I see in the foot well that may go to the power outlet is #32 retained accessory power. This looks to me as a circuit breaker, is that right? I didn't think to check to see if I was getting power at the fuse, will do that next.
 Also I am thinking of adding alligator clips to the air compresser and a in line 20 amp fuse, and just ran the compresser right off the battery.

Use a voltmeter or testlight for your testing.

Be sure to check for B+ and gound at the plug.  That circuit is a straight shot from fuse to the lighter/power outlet.  There is a connector on the back of the outlet so there is a place to look also.

Recheck the fuse holder, sometimes the electrical terminals backout, so when the fuse is plugged in there is only one electrical contact.

G300 is the ground, it's shared with many other components so if the rest if the car works don't bother disassembling the center console to get to it.

The most likely problem is the outlet or the connector.

Anyone know how to remove the panel the 12 volt socket is connected to? I can't reach the connector from the shifter boot area. Thanks

You have to remove the dash bomarang.  There are how to's on the board.

From memory, you have to remove the shift boot
There is a bolt to remove the OH $H!T handle, and then I believe it is all body clips from there.

someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Anyone have pics of how the wire attaches to the plug so maybe I could disconnect it without having to rip my dash apart.
I can get my hand on the back of the socket if I remove the glove box.

I'd like to see if I could take that apart and test it there.

I've had these 12v accessories die before, I'm betting that everything up to it is fine.

I don't have a pic of it, but I've seen the one on my Sky before.  It is a very common design where it is a rectangular socket, and on one of the wider sides, there is a tab you must pry on in order to be able to release the connection.

There's 2-quick's dash photos that might help: http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/attachments/f61/2851d1131967493-dove-into-dashboard-pics-info-inside-iptrim3.jpg

This is the one of the back of the socket (connector removed, but you can see what it plugs into):

In looking at your picture. How would you manipulate the plug to get it out of the plastic?
That might help me.
Does it twist and come out the back, or twist and come out in the front?

well i took my dash apart to get to my power outlet connector. I get power and ground at the electrical  connector but when it gets connected to the outlet insert it doesnt work. the insert comes out by using a pick to push out  the two tabs on the inside of the insert. i dont see any damage but the  insert probably overheated when i used the onboard air compressor while fixing a flat i got last week. it was an easier fix than i thought it was gonna be  ill just pick up an insert at the dealer when i get my gmpp turbo tune flashed.  thanks to all who helped me out.

The wiring plug comes out the back of the socket (if that's what you're asking).  There's a release tab on one side of the plug that you squeeze, then wiggle it out the back of the socket, leaving the brown cross-shaped hole in the photo above. (Sorry if I'm misunderstanding the question)

I took off the entire lower dash of the sky.
Hardest part of the reinstall is the trunk release button. The wire is so short that you have to balance everything just right as you are reconnecting it, otherwise this stupid little rubber piece will fall.

The back of mine was not pushed in all the way.
Not sure how that happened, but I'm glad it was simple.

There are two terminals at the #30. When the fuse is out: one terminal is B+, the other is cold because it connects to the power outlet. If there is no B+ there should be other problems.. e.g. Do the wipers work?

Circuit is B+ ----->Fuse#30Underhood>------>Outlet>--------G300 underconsole
                      !-->Fuse>-----
                      !-->Fuse>------
