P0299...again
« on: July 21, 2012, 11:42:30 AM »
It's been awhile since I have had any problems but P0299 is back again. Last time I adjusted the waste gate 1/2 turn and problem went away until 2 days ago. I am guessing the last adjustment must have been just on the edge of the limit for underboost. Any thoughts as to what else it might be? All hoses and clamps check good.

I cleared the code and am going to take her for a drive and see what happens before doing anything.

I don't think so. It was only in the mid 90's so nothing new there. I tried clearing the code but the check engine light remains on. Now that I have driven it the power doesn't seem to be all there. It is boosting to 18 psi but before the code it would spike at 20-21 before dropping back down. It just feels a little, sluggish, if that is the right term.

Anyone know why the code won't clear?

It could be the spring for the Bypass valve

Possible the Boost Solenoid or the Bypass Solenoid.

Just to be safe, pull the intake pipe and check for oil. Check turbo itself for play in the bearings.

Also, just out of curiosity, have you tried reflashing your tune?

Spare turbo is at the cleaners!  As far as I can see everything is tight. Last time this happened I turned the waste gate shaft adjustment nut half a turn and it has been good up til now.

Will check for oil. I have not had the tune reflashed. I plan to take her in next month and get the differential fluid changed and will talk to them about reflashing.

Took a trip to the grocery store a short time ago. Seems to be running better now. Still can't clear the code. Any guesses on that? I tried to clear it with a DashHawk.

Try tuning the car off for a while
then only put it to ACC, read the DTCs and try again

No luck. However, the car keeps going into limp mode now so I don't think it will clear until fixed. Always seems to do it in 4th gear under light acceleration. Weird. I will take it next week and have them deal with it. I think it is just the waste gate needing adjusting again. Can't find anything else wrong with it.

Thanks GJ.  My dashhawk has always worked before. I think the code is being set because the fault is constantly being sent? We will see what the dealership can find next week.

yes it is probably being constantly sent by the ECM. I would look into the MAP sensors, MAF sensor and make sure you clean them all out with maf/contact cleaner... if all those check out perhaps you should try looking at the boost solenoid.

That all being said, if you could get your hands on HPT and log it, it will tell you way more than any guessing will.

I have scheduled an appointment with the dealership. I'm gonna let them fix it since it is still under warranty.

Ok. Got it back from the dealer yesterday after getting oil change, differential fluid change and new key fob (fob covered under warranty)! They could not duplicate P0299 again (no surprise) but did find #2 o2 sensor bad and R&R'ed it. Within one mile of driving it home, you got it, limp mode. Same thing today and this time got the check engine light to come on also. It seems down on power (when not in limp mode) only boosting to 15 psi like it was back in stock mode. Maybe they reflashed the ECM but the service rep did not mention it nor was it anywhere on the paperwork. Only seen it spike to 16 psi once and only for a split second. Typically with the heat here it will spike to 20-21 and settle in at 18-19. Even my 17 yo son could feel the difference on our trip to Sonic. Taking her back in on Monday or Tuesday. I still think the turbo just needs a simple adjustment.

I had my car in the dealership about a year and a half ago and they flashed the ECM and was not posted on the paper work.
Ever since that happened I purchased another ECM that I keep with the stock flash.

So if you have GMPP tune and sensors and they flash back to non-GMPP, you'll definitely go into limp.  So maybe they fixed the first and caused a second problem.  :gaah:

Yes, that would cause a cell because 2 tables in the tune would be wrong

I haven't pulled the code yet because I assumed it was P0299 again. Now you have me wondering and will pull it tomorrow morning when there is some daylight. The car spools unbelievably slow and can barely (sometimes not at all) break traction in second when before it was no problems whatsoever. Today it only once spiked at 15 psi and the rest of them time 13-14 psi.

There is a vacuum solenoid that attaches to the wastegate rod actuator could that solenoid be bad or a cracked and causing his issue?

Thanks elff. Dropped her off this morning and am waiting on the phone call. I still think it is an adjustment to the wastegate but we shall see... One thing for sure is that it is a bummer to drive without the power. Like swimming in molasses or something like that.

Got a call from the dealership and they are replacing what he called
the waste gate valve? I wonder if that is the same thing as the waste gate solenoid?
