Looking for new 2013.2 Garmin maps?
« on: August 26, 2012, 08:34:56 AM »
Those that have a Garmin either built in to a head unit or stuck to the dash with a suction cup can use this. The new 2013.2 maps are out and can be downloaded on the site that recently had the 2013.1 maps.

The maps are on the Kenwood forums. in the DNX9960 area and I would suspect some other places. If you can't find them, PM me.

I'm using waze.com on my smart phone. Driver generated GPS based map that allows updates to changing road conditions. It's free and constantly updated by the users. Great for reporting accidents, road hazzards, the cops, and recognizes your speeds when are below the limit and highlights the road to let you you'll be slowing. There is also a chat function which is great when the highway is closed as someone is usually posting directions around the stopped area.

Bob

Do you know what the differences are?

I downloaded the 2012.1 maps and they sucked as bad as the previous ones.

I am at the point where I might reduce my radio to a single DIN so I can mount the iPhone in the space underneath it.   I have a really nice one in the jeep that has bluetooth and a built in Mic for handsfree talking and a USB port that can power an iPhone.

My other option, which will determine what I do in the long run, is if a 7" iPad comes out.  If that happens, I will install that instead of a radio.  This would be a total kick @$$ option.

Don't want to derail, but since we're talking different nav setups and this particular setup, I've recently been using my dad's old Alpine IVA-W205, a Garmin nuvi 1490, and an Apine INE-S920HD up a bunch lately.  The IVA-W205 is just plain outdated: it's a few years old now so a lot of missing roads in new subdivisions less than 2 years old, POIs that don't exist anymore, and dated as hell of an interface.  The Garmin nuvi 1490 is running the 2012.1 maps at surprisingly it isn't great either.  And it had more difficulty finding satellites compared to the much older Alpine INA-W205.

The INE-S920HD is fantastic, but then it again it's super new/updated, so that probably helps.  I live in a brand new subdivision in which google satellite still shows construction (shingled, but no sod yet), and streetview doesn't even show the structure yet, and the INE-S920HD is the only one that has my street on it.  Really quick to fix position, even in bad weather, which often gave the Garmin issues.

I'll try updating the Nuvi 1490 with the 2013.1 map, and see how that goes.

I have a Tom-Tom in my Sol with lifetime maps.  It updates maps every 3 months, it still hasn't updated the intersection of Waugh Chapel and Rt 3 in Gambrills, which is a major change in the intersection.  The road work was finished over 6 months ago.  It has the 95/695/895 changes around Baltimore.

My wife's Honda has the newest maps in her Stock navigation system, it is missing the changes on 95/695/895 around Baltimore which are over a year old, and it is missing entire neighborhood.

In my truck I have a Pioneer with what ever version of Maps they use.  It is an older 310bt and as of last year they no longer support the maps on it.  They are about as current as the 'new' maps in the Honda.  Bottom line if you want the most current maps you have to have a unit that has life time map upgrades and accepts user input to the roads.

Have you sent in the corrected info for that intersection to the TOM TOM user community?

I agree completely.  The logic in the Garmin is what sucks, and shy of buying a new head unit, I will not be able to fix that.  But they still are missing roads completely that have been in other systems for years.   This I just can't understand.

No I have not, but I do get weekly updates from user input, and the lifetime traffic report is great as well.  I guess I should get off my duff and figure out how to send in the information.

Then you sir, are part of the problem
:D

The last time I drove down to the MM, Garmin did not have the 95/695/895 mapped properly.

It's what you get used to I guess. I know several people (sister-in-law, co-worker) that had Tom-Toms and got rid of them and bought Garmins and have been much happier. They simply didn't like the Tom-Tom. My co-worker especially surprised me 'cause he always talked the Tom-Tom up before he made the switch.

Maybe the Garmin maps are better in Canada. I do know though, that a smart phone option is out 'cause I still don't have one of those blasted things. (Looking for the old man smiley waving a cane)

The only purpose of this thread was to let everyone know that the 2013.2 maps were available. If you don't have a Garmin move on, there's nothing to see here.   :D

The Smart phone option is Navigon.  Garmin, as far as I know acquired them, and that's what I use now.  I like it better than the TOM TOM app.

I'm not going to spend the time downloading these.  They were still incomplete the last time.  I can't even use my Garmin to get to the Mod Meet properly.

If my son and I don't show up you'll know what happened.    ;)

I've used Tom Toms on road trips with friends that have had it, and prefer the Garmin.  Seemed to have more and more accurate POIs than the Tom Tom of same age (both were within 6 months of release at the time), and rural roads like for cottages where we were going, it had roads that the Tom Tom didn't.

And I'm totally with you on the not having a smart phone.  I'm incredibly hard on equipment as they say.  I only get watches with sapphire crystal, or I bang up their faces in no time.  I love old school chocolate bar style phones you can throw across the room and the worst thing that happens is the battery falls out.  I've broken tonnes of fancy schmancy phones over the years, and I'm through with it.  I'm currently using an old Sony Ericcson chocolate bar style phone, and still love it.  Pretty good camera, syncs just fine with all the various bluetooth headsets, in dash units, etc, plays music through speakers surprisingly well actually, and most importantly built like the proverbial shit brick house.  My service provider will give me a free phone because I've been with them so long, but they don't have a single phone at least as durable as what I have now.

There's pretty much wifi everywhere now, and I often have my laptop with me for work/school.  I'm pretty much only ever away from the internet while commuting, which I like.

I added some I-95 corridor information in the SMMM9 thread, about construction on I-895
