Change the thermostat just because?
« on: March 13, 2013, 06:19:01 PM »
Gonna open the system up soon to change the coolant and install the check valves that I have, but have really never had an issue that found it necessary to install.

If I'm in there to change the coolant and to install the check valves should I throw a new thermostat in at the same time?

Yeah an ACDelco and nothing else. Never had an issue with the old one and it would be nice to keep it that way.

Id say no to all the work until you have no choice.

If it ain't broke why fix it?

Then, no matter which fails, do it all at once.

I'm there now Dave as I've had the car for 5 years and haven't had to touch the cooling system. It's time to change the antifreeze and I've the check valves to install so while I have it drained anyway it really is a good time to do the thermostat. It's likely fine but heck, they're cheap enough.

I have to agree with elff on this one. You may be doing other things to the cooling system, but taking out the thermostat and putting in a new one when the one in there is working fine, is not what I would call preventive maintenance, unless you are close to the 100K miles on the engine.

I have less than 30,000 miles or there abouts. I don't know if I NEED to do it as I have had a lot of cars that I've never had to change the thermostat. Just thought it might be an idea if I have the coolant out of the engine anyway.
