Tool Rental
« on: May 27, 2015, 12:07:08 PM »
Anyone that followed the HP Tuner for sale thread knows that I have a spare interface cable and that my Grinch-like heart wants to help others and return the help that I have been afforded from the members of this forum.

I have a few tools available for those that want to do modifications but don't want to spend the money on a tool that will set around afterwards.

First tool is the HP Tuners interface cable. It is currently on loan to cyclone and will go to HydraLyfe when cyclone is done with it. Rental cost for the cable will be $200 which is fully refundable when the cable is returned as long as it is not damaged. I have a thumb drive with HP Tuners loaded onto it that is tied to the serial number and application key along with instructions for installation and use. Best part about this interface is that it has a license for all 2007 Solstices so you will not need to purchase credits to tune your car. If you have anything other than a 2007 Solstice, 2 credits will need to be purchased and added to the interface before I ship it to you. 2 credits cost and additional $100 which is not refundable. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Tuning will be your responsibility. While tuning a vehicle can be rewarding, it can also be dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. I can not and will not be held responsible for any damage caused to your vehicle. Before renting this interface cable, you must agree via PM that you will not hold me responsible for any damage to your vehicle.

If you want to rent a laptop, I purchased a spare laptop and have HP Tuners already loaded and ready to go on it. The laptop rental is an additional $250 and is fully refundable when it is returned as long as it is not damaged. You will still be able to copy the files and save them to your own computer for future use if necessary. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Next up are the tools required for valve spring replacement. The valve spring compressor tool is $250 and is fully refundable when it is returned as long as it is not damaged. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

The cam gear tool is $125 and is fully refundable when it is returned as long as it is not damaged. This tool number is EN-48953 and works on my 2009 model but doesn't work on 2007 models and I'm not sure when the change was made so please check to see if this tool will work for you. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Next up is a flywheel lock. $25 fully refundable as long as it is not damaged. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Last tool I currently have available is the injector seal installation tool. $125 fully refundable as long as it is not damaged. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I like to use USPS Priority Mail for shipping and shipping cost would be your responsibility. Using USPS Priority Mail keeps the shipping costs ~$15 or less for any of the tools listed above and delivers the tool to you in 3 days or less.

If you've read down this far, I also have a couple things to get rid of and may have a few others as I make my way through the shop.

Stock 2.5 bar map sensors. FREE - you pay shipping cost of $6.00

Stock intercooler pipes. FREE - not sure of shipping cost but they won't fit in a USPS box but shouldn't cost much more than $20.00

PM me for anything listed above if you are interested.

You are approaching hero status.

Is your car available under the same program?  If so, I'd like to borrow it from June 15-22 2015. Delivery will be PDX.
Thanks. My fully refundable deposit of $250 is waiting in PayPal.

Probably not a good idea to challenge GJ to fit your car into a post office box.  Just saying....

Jim, so we\(you) are missing the 2008 and 2009 Solstice/SKY.
I have a 2007 so I am set, however for those other members that have the other model years, I like to make a suggestion to the forum members.
Lets have a group buy for the credits for the other 2 years, these way the setup is complete and the only thing to do is the rental.
I am understanding this correctely or is there more to it.
Thanks

You are correct LV except that the 2007 Sky is not covered by the 2007 Solstice license. I asked Bill at HP Tuners as I "thought" it might cover the 07 Sky as well since they are basically the same platform and he said no. I also downloaded an 07 Sky tune from the repository and it wouldn't license it like it did the 07 Solstice tunes I downloaded.

Todays rates require 12 credits for a year/model license so to cover all Kappa's, it would take an additional $3000.00 which seems like a lot but if it was used a lot, it would easily pay itself off.

I'm in this to help people out and have no plans to make any money on it and thought about buying the other licenses myself but at $3k, I'd have to dig into my beer money and I simply can't justify doing that....

An idea that might work towards getting the other year/model licenses would be for those that do rent the cable to make a "donation" to a license fund. Could be whatever they feel like donating and would be another good way to generate the funds to purchase the additional licenses. I also need to revisit the credit purchasing program on HP Tuners site as they use 75% of the credits you purchase towards year/model licenses so it could actually be a little less expensive but I'd need to check the specifics on that before knowing for sure.

Jim.
We could start with say the 2007 SKY, that would be $600.
Then the 2008 Solstice would be another $600.00 and so on.
We do not have to do them all at once, but could get some of the SKY folks to do theirs.
Here is my challenge to every one else since, I think most of the forum would benefit from this endeavor.
I am in for $100.00 to get to the 1st extra model year
So what year would the forum members would like to see licensed next?

Nice LV! My second interface covers my setup but I will match your $100 towards another license whatever it may be. If it comes down to it and someone really needs one while the rental is out, I could make my second one available as well.

The HP Tuners FAQ states that it only takes 6 credits to unlock an entire model/year. Has this changed? If so, they have left themselves open to some serious complaints by not updating their FAQ page!

Jim then based on what the WEB site has, then the price for it would be $50.00 ($49.99) x 6 = $300.00 for each model year.
So all we need is another $100.00 to license a model year.
5 members at $20 would do it after adding you and me.

Am I interpreting it wrong? I see that the 07-09 Sky year model license requires 12 credits. I would be nice if 12 credits covered 07-09 but you have to license each year according to Bill. It used to be 6 credits but they must have changed it in the past couple of years.

If you look at the supported vehicles, you'll see that the y/m license now requires 12 credits. It used to be 6.

Hey guys, question about hp tuners (I did do a quick search but my phone isnt the greatest). Is this just to access your ecu and fiddle with the many parameters? Or does that 2007 license give you a canned tune which is then customizable per your mods with the program and cable? If the latter id be in for the $100 as well, former I'd have to think about it since I am 100% stock and would have to take it for some dyno time.

It doesn't include a canned tune. There are some tunes available in the repository but they would still require that you data log and adjust them to suit your setup. The access that you get with the HP Tuners tool is far more powerful than a canned tune. It can also be a dangerous tool in the wrong hands.

There are many good threads and videos on tuning the LNF on the HP Tuners forum. You can learn a lot there. If you're not able to find the threads and videos, let me know and I will find the links to them.

Anytime! If you do plan to get a tune in the future, read through the HP Tuners forum on the LNF and don't go the canned tune route like Trifecta. You'll not only be happier with your own tune but you'll also save $100 at a minimum and you'll be able to see everything that you need to see to know that your tune is safe.

IIRC the Trifecta canned tune was $200 and with this "loaner" setup, the most you'll be out of pocket is $100 which would be for the purchase of 2 GM credits in order to read and write to your ECM. If and when you decide you want a tune, I'll help you through the process as much as I can.

Jim this is very interesting. Just one thought. Are you going to need some kind of waiver of responsibility in case this falls into "the wrong hands"? I would hate to see someone try to hold you responsible for their own mistake. It is not likely to happen with the good folks here but who knows.  :2c:

Jim, One note. If the forum member has a 2007 model year then it doe not cost them a dime to use the tool.
That is why it would be an advantage if other members would want to add a contribution to this effort.
It does not have to be $100, a $10, $20 or what you can afford would be welcome.
We do need a consensus as to what the next full license will be ie model year 2008 or 2009 Solstice or SKY.

Probably not a bad idea to add one. I'll edit the original post to include one.

We do need a consensus as to what the next full license will be ie model year 2008 or 2009 Solstice or SKY.

2007 Sky will still require 2 credits until it is licensed. 2 credits were used to tune a 2007 Sky so it will only require 11 credits to license the 2007 Sky model at this point.

If others want to contribute, I would welcome them to do so. I know that some people like to remain anonymous, but if anyone is interested in contributing, I would prefer that they post their contribution to this thread so that it can be tracked. I wouldn't want anyone thinking that I'm making money on contributions and it would be easy for everyone else interested to keep track of as well.

As far as which year or model to license next, I'll leave that up to everyone interested. I've had some communications with another owner of a 2007 Sky so maybe the 07 Sky would be a good start but I'm sure anyone contributing might want their contribution to go towards their year model so I'm game for any one of them.
