New Intercooler Option!
« on: February 23, 2011, 01:11:35 PM »
We are now offering a heat dispersant coating as an option for our intercoolers.  :drive:

It is a a thermal conductive coating that is formulated to radiate heat from metal parts. This coating has been shown to increase the heat transfer 10-15% when being compared to uncoated surfaces. This allows for cooler temperatures and better efficiency. It is only available in black and is an additional $175.

this sounds real good !!!
but also sounds expensive...
have you done any testing to verify this 10-15% ?

We've had good luck with this coating so far

I just had this done to my SRT-4 intercooler so as soon as I put my trans back in the car I will do some more testing. We've had this on a Cobalt for a few months but it went on the same time as the race intercooler so it's hard to judge temp differences.

What is the coating and do you sell it as a spray on for existing IC's?

Its impregnated with aluminum, me thinks. The part should be sandblasted, sprayed, then baked on. The price is what  you would likely pay most anywhere that has __________'s coating.

I honestly don't know the name or company. I had it earlier but I shredded the paper thinking it was something else.

You would have to send your intercooler in to have it done. It has to be done like powdercoating

I know but I won't tell.  Its applied with an airbrush, not a powder coating gun. It is oven cured.

Electrofin?  I do not know what Werks is using, but we get heat exchangers coated that looks the same.  That is more for environmental purposes, though.  I do not see how adding an additional layer for the heat to travel through could increase efficiency.   :idk:

Our coater uses a brand called Microcote and yes it is impregnated with aluminum to help transfer heat out of the intercooler material itself.

Extremely durable...  Better than any paint or coating I have seen on an intercooler to date.

Interesting , must be the aluminum strengthening it like aggregate or rebar with concrete.
Bottom line is............it actually wicks heat off faster! How much? Test panel , very fast, large dense object, probably nothing measurable, intercooler? Micro cote claims 10-15%?

This coating really does work, remember that every 10 degree reduction in intake air temp = 1% more HP.. 20 degree reduction on a 450hp = 9 more hp

I still am not understanding how you think it is possible to increase heat transfer by adding an additional layer of material to the metal...

Stranger things happen just like when people mirror polish a Eaton M112 Supercharger to a mirror finish it looses a slight amount of heat transfer ability.  The ultra smooth surface looses surface area that helps in heat transfer.  The little bumps in the semi rough cast aides in heat transfer.  My guess is the impregnated aluminum particles transfer heat away faster by increasing the heat transfer surface area and the heat transfer of the media the particles are suspended.
Not really all that hard to understand if you understand a little about thermal dynamics.

Adding surface area is one thing, but think of it this way:
Each fin is X" thick.  No matter what, the heat must travel through that distance...which defines the heat transfer for that given material.  ADDING any material on top of it, no matter what the material, reduces the heat transfer.

Your example of the Eaton is totally different, as no material is coated on it, and surface area is slightly reduced.  Although, the polishing alone is just the "tip of the iceberg" and is just the easiest culprit to blame when a lot of performance mods are done at the same time, resulting in great heat loads.

Where did I say they were the SAME???
I just said Stranger things happen.
BTW
Stiegmier and a few others that have left the supercharger stock have actually confirmed this and i would take Stegmier's word since they actually pioneared alot of the aftermarket work on the Eaton M112 for Fords.
Would I do it NO since spending $250 for 3 HP is just insane in my book but that's not the Question.

Some coatings CONTAIN heat (i.e. ceramic coating on headers) while other coatings ENHANCE heat transfer (i.e. THIS http://www.swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10968).

I do not see any solid information there to prove that it works, either.  I am looking for a simple answer of how adding more material to something like this could actually increase the heat transfer.

1) Maybe directing the question directly at Matt from Werks will get an answer.
2) I can't see gravity nor lower pressure over an aircraft wing, but fortunately both work.

Assuming Werks tested this stuff (and it reads like they have), then empirical data would validate the product.
