Differential mounts
« on: July 01, 2011, 11:02:54 AM »
The Kappas with torque arms have two rubber bushings that carry the differential via two large bolts. What this means is that the entire drive train (engine, trans, diff, and driveshaft) are secured to the body/frame by these two bolts and the two engine mounts. Is anybody aware of stiffer cushions for the diff bolts? (Already shot an e-mail to DDM but no answer yet.)

Can always fill the gaps with polyurethane or ,like the import guys do, window sealer. Also the trans is secured via the mount attached to the black panel that is seperate from the tunnelbrace. So its engines mounts, trans mount and the sloppy mounts for the diff.

Forgive my ignorance about this but why would you want to stiffen this up?  Your new flywheel hasn't added enough vibrations to your car or what?  I realize your going to have some twisting of the diff due to torque just like how the motor will rock around.  But I wouldn't think you would want to stiffen up the areas that are designed to absorb those forces as they would just get transferred somewhere else like say your windshield again.

Frankly forgot about that attachment point. I would think that the gearbox would attach there on the non-torque arm cars. You have me doing this ---     Anyway, filling the voids might be a good idea. I was really surprised how soft they are.

Is this torque arm you speak of the 3rd (forward) mount point of the diff? If so, mine has that and all those mounts. I would just fill them with a soft compound to stiffen them a little more than stock. Putting urethane bushings and then just the stock rubber ones up front sems like it might tweak things more than they should. In this case the rubber connection between the driveshaft and diff. I was always told if youre going to do one in urethane, best do them all.

Bob, Energy Suspensions makes the big, single one that the single mount arm in the CTS. My 04/06 build Sky uses double mount but did use the ES bushing trimmed down on my CTS with good results. It tighten up the slop but race car direct.

Got to remember there is two more bushunga on the rear of the diff and rubber couplings on the drive shaft. The CTS had a transmission mount the was rubber also. :)

I've always wondered if the driveline "clunk" you get when you shift in and out of first (and maybe second) is due to these soft rubber bushings.  Anyone changed these or stiffened them?  Did it remove that clunk, or is that from something else.

(It's the one pet peeve of mine about the car)

Aside from replacement you cannot get rid of it.

Replacement of the gear set. It's not the clutch packs as the non-LSD makes similar clunking.

TS I assume you have a manual trans?  You might want to start a separate thread with a pole about this issue.  I have a manual trans and don't have any clunk when I shift, if I did I would be having my dealer fixing it as I don't think it should be happen.  But then again maybe my car isn't behaving properly.

Mine clunks, always has. When you press the clutch in at low speed you sometimes hear the diff clunk. Mine's an '09. Supposedly it was the rear diff bushings? I thought DDM had a kit to fix this issue but I don't see it on their site anymore. Perhaps Dave could provide some answers.

The DDM bushing 'kit' is for the old-style diffs with the single mount ('06/'07)

I have an '08 manual.  For SA's benefit, yes I certainly have a clunk, must noticeable when clutching/declutching in and out of 1st, such as in stop/go traffic. I can avoid it if I'm very easy on the clutch, but who has the time?

Definitely seems like driveline lash to me - rather than cogs - but could very well be mistaken.

I tightened down the bolts that attach the black panel that holds the trans mount to the body and havent heard any clunking as often as I did prior to. (front or back) Maybe I just havent been listening for it.

Just for clarification, there are 3 different mounts that the front of the differential can have. The early mount is a small mount with a bushing in it that attaches by a single bolt to the differential and a single bolt to the chassis. They later improved the mount by installing the "Big Ear" mount. The Big Ear mount uses 4 bolts to mount to the differential and still a single bolt to the chassis. This also is what comes on all of the automatic cars. Later the started installing the torque arm which attaches from the differential to the transmission. All of the GXp's and Redlines that are manual transmission should have a torque arm (although there are the strange cars out there that do not). All of the GXP's and Redlines that are automatic transmission should have the "Big Ear" mount. If you have a 2006 or 2007 2.4L though, it is a little bit of pot luck which one you will have on the car. By 2008 though the 2.4L's seemed to get the torque arm for sure.

Mine does the same thing at low speeds...Its really the only thing I hate about my car.

Mine is an '06, 4 speed, with the "small ear".  I've never had the clunk.  Still have the original bushing in it.

4 speed?  did you lose a gear or did no one tell you that there was a 5th?

I have an 06 but after getting the ECM tuned and the differential worked on, somewhere in that timeframe, my Solstice no longer has the clunk, thankfully.

Sky built 04/06 5-speed has torque arm. Which makes it a breeze for clutch swap as only the rear two bolts need to be loosened and the front bolt removed to remove the drive shaft.
