So when I made this gauge pod, I knew it would cover up 3 Dash lights, ABS, Trunk Open, and Low Gas.  I don't really care about any, but being able to see them would be nice.  So I got some fiber optic rod, drilled holes in the pod I made and ran the rods too each light.  It transmits the light pretty well.  I wrapped the rod in black electrical tape so it doesn't get erroneous light.

This is how it sits as i see it.

Sweet, nothing really critical, but at least you know when they light up you need to take a look.

The nature of those light sticks will absorb side light from the dash lights too & give them a nice  glow. I have one as a dummy for my antenna ( the tip spits out light absorbed from the sides)

Perhaps you should dip/paint them in black and just clean the ends off later.  That would prevent the light from coming in on the sides.

IMHO I would dip it in liquid rubber, that way the paint wont flake off with the vibration.

I wouldn't bother, it will be obvious if they are lit. They won't produce much light from the dash, only getting a thin slice from the bottom. I think it will look nice dimly glowing.

It wont with paint either, but a tiny bit of pushing and the rubber will peal back and make a nice tight seal and fit.

If you find it annoying a sharpie's ink will kill it probably. A dab of nail polish from the back will keep them from dancing around.
