Antenna Delete
« on: August 09, 2009, 07:38:20 PM »
I think I got the shortest antenna available, 0"

I used a Metra amplified windshield antenna to replace the stock antenna. It worked great and reception is slightly better than with the stock antenna. I removed the stock antenna and for now I am using a small black rubber shelf peg cap to cover the threads. Eventually I might remove the base and have the hole welded shut and painted.

I wrote up a set of instructions and placed them on my web site. You can find them here:

Be very patient with this link, there are a lot of pictures and they will take a while to load

Nice write up.
Now you have me thinking about going the opposite way.
Since the wires are already pull to the rear of the vehicle,
I wonder if you could extend antenae from the stock location to the center of the trunk lid, and in effect, use the entire trunk for the antennae.

My main going would be to just eliminate the antenae on the ride side of the vehicle and only have the XM one visible.
I don't care if I'm not using it.

Where did you get this part from?

This is a great idea. I put a stubby CF antenna on mine, but the reception suffered greatly, so I put the half stock one back on.

Thanks for letting me know about the pictures. Some of them got renumbered during the file transfer.  I have no idea how that happened.  the original on my laptop was OK so I'm reloading the pictures again.

The antenna is sold by various vendors on the internet.  just do a Google search for Metra 44-UA200.  This antenna is fairly inexpensive.  You can pick one up for about $20-30.

So if we put this in with an aftermarket radio we wont need the antenna adapter, right?

Correct, the adaptor was only necessary for the stock radio.  The Stock Radios use the same type of antanna connector as the 2002 and newer Chryslers.

Thanks Mike,

I was actually reading your post on the power antenna.  I was trying to see what would be involved in completely removing the stock antenna base.  My neighbor owns a body shop and he welded the antenna hole shut on my mustang and painted over it.  It came out great, you can't tell there was an antenna there at all.  I'm thinking of doing that to the Solstice.

By the way, I did this delete, and I'm not happy so far. The reception is crappy, but I'm going to have to try moving the antenna to see if it helps.

Don't they sell on EBay a antenna that is basically a wire type that can go across the top of the windshield so you could delete the stock antenna?

I believe that's what Odiaz was talking about in his original post.

Make sure the antenna is getting power.  Without power, the reception would be less than desirable.  I get better reception with the powered antenna then I did with the stock antenna.

It's got power. The light is red. I have 2 theories I'm going to try out:

1) I also have a power line for my auto-dimming mirror running next to the antenna cable on the pillar. I don't THINK this is the problem, but unhooking this power is an easy test.
2) I have a coupe. So, this hidden antenna is sitting right above my Onstar box in the center of the windshield, behind some black paint. I assumed this would be OK, since the Onstar is behind the black paint too, but maybe either the Onstar or the paint is interfering/shielding. I'm going to try to move the antenna to clear glass on the passenger side to see if it gets better.

Should be able to try this weekend or early next week. Reception right now is horrible. Easily worse than the shorty antenna that I had in place.

I'm taking this one step further.  I need some body work done so I will remove the antenna base completely and have the hole welded and painted.  I'll uipdate the instructions and show some pictures when it's done.

Wanted this to replace a plain old bolt on the chrome belt guard on Linda's Victory. These came in a two pack, and just happen to fit the antenna stud. Needed to cut an 1/8 inch or so off the stud.

Antenna delete project is fnally complete.  Just got the car back from the body shop and I think it looks great.  The color match was perfect and it is very smooth.  Noone could ever tell there was anything there.

I soooo wanna do that too and somehow tie into the Satellite antennae on the truck.
I wouldn't mind finding something similar in size to the stock XM antennae that is designed for AM/FM
I would think that if I can turn the entire rear deck lid into the antennae, it would get better reception

Anywho
that looks great.
