I love a 283 ! Am I the only one in the world?
« on: June 23, 2010, 07:28:26 PM »
I would love to put a 283 in my Solstice. I loved the 283 back in the 60's. A friend had a 1960 Vette with a 283 and it was wonderful.

Am I the only guy in the world that doesn"t want 400 ci ? :sorry:

Would Mallet or Dave do a 283/Solstice? :poke:

I think it would be a lot more difficult to put a 283 in the kappa, while it is a great small block, it is not an engine that is made for electronic control.  You would have to really go old school to install and set it up.

Is there a modern engine about that size?

The current 4.8 is as close as GM gets as far as I know.  It is a 293 CI modern electronic control engine.  Should be plenty of help for it out there.

GM is now offering the LS based 5.3 as a complete crate engine for some amazing low price. It's not a 283...but it is a 327! 327 HP with a mild cam, iron block, aluminum heads...and GM is preparing a complete ECU to go with it. List price (w/o ECU) is $4030. Street prices are approx $3175 to $3600. You can read more about it in the Sept 2010 issue of High Performance Pontiac, now on newstands.

Sorry, I don't get this.

You have some sort of nostalgic feeling for the 283 because you once owned one, so you want to put a lower power obsolete engine in a Solstice that came with a much better motor, just so you can be close to a 283 whenever you drive it?

I think you need to get out more......

The Vortec 4.8 might be the ticket...............even though it's a "truck engine".

The 5.3 sounds interesting ( or was it 5.6?)..........but isn't that a damn transverse mount ?

I have always had a warm place for a 5.0L (302).  327 with a 283 crank.  Early Z28's had them.

I agree leave those wonderful engines to the old cars they belong to.
Back in the late 60 early 70's when I was doing serious drag racing my 1964 Vette with a stroke 327(383) was a consistent 11 second car.
With the 4:56 rear and a set of slicks it was lots of fun.
However that 64 Vette was a tank to drive because of the optimal drag racing setup.
Now I love the feeling of a well balance roadster you can put through some twisty roads, although not many of those here in South Florida.

can you take a old 283 block and put some new modern parts on/in it?

might be fun if you are into making a funky different car and spending the money on a custom solution.

All the better to go with our "truck" transmission!

Hi there!

A 283 is a historic engine, but isn't a good choice considering the alternatives unless you have to have a period-correct or numbers-matching engine (i.e. a restoration).  With it's sub-4" bore it is difficult to get decent heads.  The oiling system has been revised since then.  The only cranks available are small-journal cranks (though I suppose you could have a custom crank made and stuffed in a 307 to make a large-journal 283).  It's not easy to build big power from a 283 without going to radical headwork ($$$), radical cam timing (not easy to drive), or forced induction.

A "modern 283" as a 4.8L LS truck engine is the right way to go if you want a small displacement V8.

The 5.3 LS engine is a RWD engine used in trucks.  It's a good choice.  GM has a 5.7 crate that makes 327 horsepower, or pull one from a late-model truck.  The salvage truck engine makes a bit less power than the crate but that's easy to fix.

I really enjoyed the 327 V8 from my 1969 Impala SS, the engine was close to square. They were very popular for HP improvements. I can recommend using anything like that on a new car like our Kappa's.  If you go V8 look at the crate engines from http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/
