Brake Line Lock
« on: June 28, 2010, 04:26:31 PM »
I'm thinking about installing a brake line lock for assisting me with burnouts at the track to warm up the tires.

I'm looking at the following products
B&M Launch Control
http://www.atlanticspeed.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=5381&idcategory=24#details
http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Launch-Control_3/Launch-Control-with-Installation-Kit

Hurst Launch control
http://www.jegs.com/p/Hurst/Hurst-Roll-Control-Kit/745801/10002/-1

Summit Racing
http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=line%20lock&dds=1

One of the many "how to"s I found online.  Seems simple enough.

Other info which could relate to what JimmyBaja's car is doing

Line Lock

When they first came out, manual trans cars were the thing to drag race. Three pedals, two feet. You do the math. If the track was not perfectly flat or if the clutch had any drag at all, you would roll out of the beam and red light. A "line lock" locked you on the line (also sometimes called a "Roll Control"). With one, you could have your left foot on the clutch and your right foot could have the engine in the trees and you didn't have to worry much about an accidental red eye. Some drivers realized additional benefits. You could lightly pre-load the clutch to take some of the slack out of the drive train to prevent breakage. I remember reading that Bob Glidden used a pressure gauge on the front brake line so he could pre-set the pressure at a known value which would prevent the car from rolling but would allow rolling as the clutch engaged so he could control the roll into the beams for staging deep or shallow. As the performance abilities of automatics improved, and when tranny brakes appeared, the line lock was relegated to a burnout device for most people.

I was just looking at one of the road blocks that I have to overcome.  The anti-lock brake module.  There are two separate line coming out of it to the front brakes LF and RF for obvious reasons.  So I have called DDM and I'm awaiting a call from Randy as Dave says he may have an idea.  In the mean time I continue the research to see if I can figure out how to overcome this.

Aaah, thinking about yourself again I see, the heck with your buddies who are trying to keep up with your extra HP & 5 speed manual tranny.

This is just off the top of my head. Just thinking of a simple solution to by-pass the ABS. 1) Use 2 Line Locks with 1 switch down stream of the ABS unit. 2) Pull the fuse or hook up a switch to disable the ABS unit. Use 1 Line Lock up stream between the ABS unit & Master cylinder. With the ABS unit disabled. Your brakes should act like standard power brake.

I found this link. It may help.

Installing Line Lock

These notes apply specifically to a 99 Cobra with ABS

Yes I did Jimmy, he said you may need to get a hold of Westers for a TCM tune.  Thanks Hammer, I'll check that link

GTO guys have anti-lock brakes and have installed line locks so it can be done, just have to find out how.

Looks like the cobra locked only one wheel with his installation.

Oh and I'm not going to use their b/s huge indicator light.  You see the e-brake set the brake light on the dash by making a ground.  I'm going to use an additional relay that when I press the line lock button, it makes the ground for the e-brake thus setting the light in the dash.

So, you gonna do a push button on the shifter? If so, I'd have a seperate switch to arm the system...

I have a manual so a push button on the shifter isn't an option.  I've got a short shifter from JPM and when I'm in first I can extend my thumb and reach the surface next to the 12v accessory so I'll place a simple small momentary switch from Radio shack there.

That is how we have done it on another platform with ABS, and it worked just fine.

Hmmmm... Starting to sound like a good idea. Burnouts, drag racing, etc... Oh wait what am I thinking, I don't support these things!!!

Great idea Joe. Will be interested to see if will work out and the benefits during a drag race.

Not true...Especially now that you have Joe's shifter so you can change the knob. Kelu's got some examples... I've seen others on ebay (I've got one in my garage that we almost put on my GF's PT to activate the 2nd stage of her boost controller)

Joe's shifter is a solid shaft, I'd have to drill the shaft to allow for wiring.

Depends on how high you have the boot... you could just run it down the backside under the boot. Even if you want the boot lower, you could wrap the shifter in chrome tape, hiding the wires.

No, I wouldn't think about trying to drill out the shifter.

Waste of money Joe, in the excitement of the moment, you will forget to release the button, until you see your oponents tail lights.  Buying it just to do burnouts - really?

All this to beat a Stage 2 supercharger at an average track... Hmmm... Seems like a lot just to win a race and have a little fun in parking lots.
