2010 Solo Nats
« on: September 10, 2010, 12:00:25 AM »
Have not been keeping track of B/S or C/S, but B/SP is a bit of a surprise, most of all to ME. Scroll down to see day one results. http://scca.com/popup/raceresult.aspx?event=15171&file=1097 The weather was dodgy with dry conditions during the second runs. The times from 3rd back to 10th are too tight to predict anything. The courses are BIG, fast, and demanding enough. Not sure what the weather will be for our heat tomorrow, so it could be crazy.

Pretty sure that Streak will be a trailer car for 2011 after a serious diet. The mental laundry list is getting longer.

Well ............................. it's over. More stories than I want to type about. And that is just in B/SP !!!!!!!!!! So, I will stick with B/SP. At the end of day 1, I was in fifth place out of 23, and the first non-Evo. But, it all went in the crapper on day 2 due to rain. Rain? Evo's on E85 with 375-400 whp? Hey, WTF could go wrong, huh? First laps were sloppy for everyone, with complete mayhem in grid with people changing from wets/street to A6s and back, including me. With the prospect of semi-drying conditions, I put the A6s back on and was WAAAAY careful. The first runs saw the Evo's I had clobbered last year and this go vaulting into the top ten while I tanked. All the 2 wheel drive cars had issues and so did some of the Evo's. Second runs were a bit better as the drizzle had stopped and a dry line was sort of developing. I dumped a bunch of time and moved into the mid teens. Third runs were nearly dry and times were plummeting  My last run dumped another 2 seconds and I landed in tenth - third place 2 wheel drive behind a well done C4 Vette and a crazy good BMW. My goals were to land in the top half of the field and not to get spanked by the Pontiacs, and I managed both. Had it stayed dry both days, I just might have brought home more than some stories. "If I coulda, woulda, shoulda." Streak was great, and with a 100-150 pound diet and 110 octane, 2011 could be fun.

BTW, it was great seeing Alex and Roger again, and meeting Rich Hammond. Just 364 days to the re-match. Power to the geezers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. Pretty happy with the event and the results. I really do believe the car was capable, and it seemed as if I was on my game for a change. If (there I go with the big "IF") it had been dry of Friday I am confident I could have been in the (back end of) trophies. Oh well. I have the laundry list for 2011, the car will be a dedicated race car and no longer a D.D., so "stuff" will be coming out of the car. Lyndon has already preparing a 110 tune !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Solo Nats are less than 52 weeks away !!

Some cobalts have just started running half E85 and getting power from it. Might help you for next year

IT WILL BREAK YOUR FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS DIRECT FROM A GM ENGINEER

GM WILL FIGURE IT OUT AND THEY WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY

NOT going to experiment with E85. I loathe ethanol. Even the Sunoco and VP 100 octane fuels are E10. However, VP110 is leaded gas, but not sure about any ethanol content. I may not be able to avoid corn liquor in my gas, but I will not risk damaging the fuel system. As for next year, Thanks, Yogi. I am gaining control of the car, but not the rain !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go Bob! Good to see that we have something for the guys at the top of the heap. One questions though:
Lyndon has already preparing a 110 tune !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
However, VP110 is leaded gas, but not sure about any ethanol content. I may not be able to avoid corn liquor in my gas, but I will not risk damaging the fuel system.

How are you going to run 110? What has to be done to rework the system to handle leaded gas.

Remove the O2 sensors, plug the holes, and get it tuned. Oh, and pay through the nose for the fuel. In Lincoln Sunoco 100 is $6.50/gallon, and in the KC area (where there is no Sunoco) VP100 is $8/gal and VP110 is $7.50/gal. Did I mention what happen to the fuel consumption rate on the high octane stuff? Holy crap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob is that the same a avgas which is called 100LL with the LL standing for low lead?  Avgas actually has two octane rating numbers in this case 100LL is 100/110 and that is for the lean and rich mixture settings.  It's been a while since I had to price out avgas but it might be easier to find at your local airport.

Not Avgas. The Sunoco and VP 100 octane are both unleaded E10 fuels. The VP110 is leaded straight gasoline. Avgas is designed with ingredients to resist icing (at altitudes) and other characteristics unique to flying.

My goals were a) finish in the top half, and b) not get spanked by all the Sol drivers. DONE !!!!!!!!!!!! Streak will be lighter and stronger for 2011. I just hope I am up to it.
