Your thoughts and opions on a possible turbo system for my Sol.
« on: December 23, 2010, 07:14:37 AM »
I am seriously considering installing a Turbocharged or Supercharged system in my 2009 Solstice Street Edition. I have read many different threads on the Solstice and Kappa Forum sites to get an idea who may have the best solution. I have also been talking to a performance garage here in Houston as to what their suggestion would be. We have looked at the different sites(ie. DDM,Hahn, and Performance Werks).

This Performance garage came up with the following proposal.

I would be grateful for your input and comments.

Thanks!!

Below is a rough proposal of what he would do:

Parts:

1. Intercooling piping custom made similar to Hahn or DDM.
2. Bar and plate intercooler
3. 304 Stainless Steel Turbo Manifold
4. 304 Stainless Steel Downpipe with O2 sensor provisions
5. Garret GT Turbo ( 2860 series )
6. Tial MVS Wastegate
7. Tial Q BOV
8. 3" Turbo Intake with dryflow filter (custom)
9. Fulltune(Dyno) of turbo system with HP Tuners
10. Stainless steel braided oil plumbing lines
11. Upgraded fuel injectors for turbo system
12. Return fuel system conversion w/ AFPR
13. Walbro 255 lph high pressure fuel pump
14. Heatshielding for turbo system
15. T Bolts and 4 ply silicon couplers for intercooler system
16. Spec 2 or 2+ upgraded clutch, maybe 3+
17. Aluminum heavy duty radiator for turbo system

At the sametime I will be installing the Solo Performance SQR2 exhaust system and a high flow cat.

First of all 2009 Solstice Street Edition means 2.4L NA (LE5) or 2.0T (LNF)?

very good parts bro.

I suggest using 321 stainless steel for your manifold and downpipe.   304, is ok, and a cheaper product.  Yes, 321 stainless steel is a bit pricey, but the best thing there is especially for your manifold.

You don't want something that will be customized for your car and paying that person high $$$$ then later on, cracking.   Then you'll have it repaired/built again.

321 stainless steel tubing is one of the most desirable materials for exhaust systems because of its excellent resistance to fatigue and cracking at elevated temperatures. It is usually the material of choice for high temperature turbo applications.

I am not sure if you've heard of "cryo-treatment".  You can go to my sponsor's website nitrofreeze.com   to learn more

You can have your 321 ss manifold cyro-treated as well for durability.   321 stainless steel is 17-19% carbon. It would benefit from cryo-treatment. the manifold will undergo stress relieving. This helps remove stresses that will develop intro cracks as the part ages. Retained austenite will convert to martensite making the manifold less susceptible to cracking.

Might as well just pay one time! :)

then once all your custom "hot parts" are fitted perfectly, you can have them swaintech coated.   This will keep heat inside the pipes which will help a bit with spooling due to thermal velocity.

Plus of course swaintech coating will help your engine bay temp cooler......  :)

Not too familiar with 2.4L engine but your list looks good. The only thing which I can comment is about the turbo, I wouldn't go GT25 being too small in my opinion. I would go GT28 to aim over 300hp.

Thanks,

I haven't rulled out DDM  and I have talked them about their systems. This thread is for me to get an idea about putting a turbo system(this proposal) in my car as compared to a supercharger system. And as I will be spending a large amount of money on this, I want to be sure and happy of my choice.

by the way, if you can get SPEC stage 3+,  go with that.

my issues with stage 2 and 2+ are:
- you have not enough cushion, especially if later on, you want to boost higher.  Their tq capabilities are not really that high.
- streebality and driveability is not up to par compared to stage 3+

Stage 3+  = flagship of Spec since it is very streetable/driveable and can handle tons of tq.    Actually, with LNF application, I know that Stage 3+ has more TQ capacity compared to Stage 4!!! :)

I will not go with "stage 4 or 5" due to the fact that they're already 4 or 6 puck which makes them hard to drive on the streets.   Stage 3+ is still full-faced.

The clutch is good to around 280 ft lbs depending on how you drive which is well within the comfort zone of the SC. If your going turbo you'll need a clutch like SKY888 mentions.

I didn't see boost controller on your list. I used AEM Tru Boost that fits in a boost gauge location.

Yes, I have talked to Mike at DDM extensively about my car and what they could do for me. I was quite impressed and as I have stated in this thread, I am considering DDM as well.

Thanks NormSky!!

I talked to him and he suggested that it would be set at around 8 psi or so.  I could get used to the new setup and that I could also adjust it afterwards to my needs.

Does that make any sense?

I don't either, but for those that do, it is certainly good to have the data points about what may be working. I know if somebody gave me something for my car and it didn't work as represented then that item would sure come back off to be returned !!!!!!!!!!! Hey, sometimes FREE sucks. Sometimes FREE works out real well. It is good to know either way.
