That was insane,  I am glad I watched it live because my recording ended prematurely.
If you have not watched it yet, I would suggest waiting for it to appear on ESPN's on Demand so you don't miss anything.

If you take a close look at it the hallo isn't even bent or dented, it did it's job.  I have never seen someone get out of a car so fast.  It was 18 seconds from collision to he was jumping over the guardrail.

Without the Halo, or if he somehow got knocked unconscious, Grosjean would not have made it out alive.
I just can't believe the front half of the car split and went through the barrier.   So far the only thing F1 has updated is burns on the backs of his hands.  Seeing the instant fireball, I seriously thought he was dead.

It took 3 attempts to see the whole race for me,  live recording cut off the end of course.  No problem I caught it before the rebroadcast so I set the DVR to record that one, F'n ESPN cut that off after lap 31!  WTF?  Fortunately there was another rebroadcast going on at that same time that I was watching the recording so I tuned in and was able to see it all.

Grosjean is so lucky to still on this side of the grass.

Stroll rolls it over.

Perez  has a car-b-que.

That stupid marshal runs across the track.

The FIA needs to take a hard look at improving safety at this track.  Between Grosjean and that marshal there could have been two fatalities if things were just a little different.

That was a once-in-a-lifetime event.  The car did what it was supposed to do, protect the driver.  Everything is designed to breakaway from the cockpit, just not all at once at 140 mph into a steel barricade.  There was a close up of the hallo on Instagram.  It had a nick in it, amazing.  I personally believe that the barricade splitting like that saved his life.  It absorbed enough of the shock of the collision so that the deacceleration g's weren't deadly.  The fire is something else entirely,  that will have to be looked at closely.  Current belief is part of the shattered floorboard penetrated it.

How about the doctor and safety car driver?  Open face helmets, no firesuit but they still went right into the fire to help him out.  And that marshal was trying to get to the accident.  Only one thing on his mind the driver needed help, no thoughts on his own personal safety.

:slap:I applaud everyone except the one guy with the fire sting wisher on the left hand side of the screen, that could had been a lot closer to spray, as oppose to doing it up in the air and having no effect at all.
You can see the difference from the guys on the other side, really doing what they need it to do to get the fire under control.
I hope they do some work to that area, as to have a more cushing affect as oppose to that all metal barrier.
All the stars were align for Grosjean that day, really glad everything turned out fine.

Surely F1 uses something a little more high end than Bondo, I mean they are not NASCAR.

NASCAR has gone a step down from Bondo, nowadays they probably just put a sticker over it. (Haven't watched since 2005ish. F1 doesn't interest me, and while I followed the Australian Supercars series for a bit I haven't had time in a while. Grassroots drag racing is just easier.)
2005 Chevy Silverado Z71 Crew Cab, LM7 4L60E (What I traded my Kappa for. I regret nothing.)
2012 Chevy Camaro 2SS RS LS3 TR6060.
2021 Ram 2500 Cummins
2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. 3.6, manual trans.

George Russell will be driving the big black Merc formally known as #44

Shumaker will be driving for HAAS next year.   They announce the other driver as well.  They also anounced who will be driving Russell's Williams.

I am looking forward to seeing Russell drive the Merc.  But it got me wondering, doesn't Merc have a reserve driver?  What's going on there?

I have the same questions as Sol Asylum has. Why can George Russel step into a MB race car been a Williams driver?.
I know this is practice but it also shows any or almost any of these drivers when driving the best car can accomplish the top spot. Now lets see if he can do it in qualy.

had the fastest car in FP2 as well   LV  they cover that in the FP1 coverage.   Williams is part of the Mercedes family.  But they still had to write up a new contract for him to drive.  They also mentioned that Toto had called their reserve driver on Monday and he caught the first plane out, by the time he landed George was in the seat.   George had driven the big Merc's before during testing for the last 3 years.

Vottas is having a hard time with his Merc on this course.  My personal opinion is he is trying to hard

Good info Critterman.

Wow, Russel is the real deal.  Tomorrow is going to be interesting.  Granted, I don't think it can be anywhere near as exciting as the past 2 races, but I really look forward to Russel driving a car at the exact other end of the spectrum
