P0299 et al
« on: September 18, 2012, 03:57:56 PM »
Got a cel recently with following codes: P0101, P0299, and P2178. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the MAF sensor and called it good. Don't think they drove it though because it is still only getting mid level boost (12psi). Is it hard to pull the intercooler? I remember driving over a rock about the same time the problems started and now am beginning to think I cracked the intercooler. Can it be leak checked without pulling it? Any help is appreciated.   :(

If you have a inter cooler leak your LTFT's will be  Negative.  Mine were sitting at -10 but would sometimes go to -13 on my LTFT.
If your lucky the crack is on the front of the inter cooler on the seam of one of the end caps and you can see it and feel it.

Are these fuel trims? What kind of equipment do I need to monitor? Would a dashhawk work? Sadly I don't know much at this level electronics for engines...

...Actually, I know just enough to be dangerous!

Kelu - I think Tazz is of the work smarter not harder kind... Thanks for that thread from Kenny. As soon as I started to read it I remembered have read it before. I will give that a try this weekend and see what happens.

Thinking back I do remember hitting a rock and that is about the same time as the problem started so this will probably be a self-inflicted wound.

Dashboss would read it as well.

I am surprised at how much of a difference the intercooler makes.  It's not just cooling air.  The volume counts.
I am temporarily running an RPI intercooler.   My car was tuned with a DDM LNF Intercooler.
Terminator had to adjust my tune at WOT because of the RPI.

Once I get the new DDM Intercooler installed I will have to flip the tune back.

Rigged up a pressure tester (1/4 female air hose fitting and a 2" pvc plug) and easily found a large leak on the lower driver side of the IC. Question now is how hard is it to remove the IC? Just remove the front clip to gain access? The IC is made of aluminum so how well does that hold up to welding?

It's pretty easy
Drive to Philadelphia
Find a street they are resurfacing.
Put it in 3rd gear and go.

Should take all of 5 seconds to remove everything in the front of the vehicle.

It's not that hard to do it the long way either.

Ok. You lost me?  :idk:

I think he means instead of welding up the leak use chewing gum.

Elff if he uses the Philly method how likely is it that the new intercooler will have the tanks welded on upside down?

You don't have to take the front bumper off to remove IC and install a new one, just slide it from underneath.

This is what I did, it is pretty easy, hardest was to remove the bolts from the wheel well and the plastic from under bumper.

Good news! Took the cover off and discovered the IC was split in a place that the rock I hit could no way have caused the damage. Split along a seem and other than the split there is no damage anywhere near it. Sooooo.... Gonna let the warranty handle it. Again. This will be the second IC on my car.

I can get a pic if anyone wants to see it (except Kelu, he always wants a pic)!

POS gets my vote! Just had a new turbo put on about a month ago and the stress was more than the old IC could bear...(Spoken like Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday)! This is my second one in 4 years so yah POS. Good news is the next time it will probably be out of warranty and then I can get a real IC!
