it could be stupid but maybe worth saying it.
if someones removes the factory grill, is it recessed from the back side (facing the IC)?
if yes, then would they fit, the left in the right bumper hole and the right in the left bumper hole.
if they fit and it all comes down to mounting points, then anybody with a set of factory grills could give them to make a mold for them as they are and let the shop adjust the mounting points

Factory grills are not recessed at all, but sit flat, like the one pictured on the other side (right side of car, left side looking at it)

sorry about the language barrier, i probable haven't explained it well Critter...
i mean, is the grill recessed from the back side (if you look at it from the inside of the bumper)?
or does it sit flat whether you look at it from front or behind the bumper

if the factory ones are recessed from the back side (the side facing the IC), then if you fit the left one on the right bumper hole with the back side facing now outwards, it would become recessed.
thus it would be much easier to make a mold with the correct mounting points.

just trying to see if there is a way to make the recessed grills' production easier

Do you mean the inside edge from the bezel to the surface running back to the grill is too sharp? If so that is because I haven't actually finished that part of the design.

The design could be one or more pieces, right now the design isn't really finished I was wanting to get input on if they are recessed too much or not enough. I think how the part is produced will be a bigger factor in how many pieces the grills are. I should be able to design it as one piece with no problem or break it into multiple pieces if that is what is wanted or needed.

I think the idea is to get them recessed as far as possilble without having to alter much of the inner bumper materials. I would say they will look best somewhere around 45 or 50mm deep. That gives enough definition to be noticeable without it looking like there is a giant hole. Additionally, it gives a large enough area that they are not an absolte pain to clean.

As for the two piece vs one piece, the advantage I see with the two piece is that it becomes much easier to offer / make different grill patterns with a two piece design. For example, if anyyone really wants chrome mesh or diamond pattern etc. They could order the grill surrounds and then use what ever material they chose to. Mounting holes could be molded in to the design to facilitate such efforts.

? I think the recess should be about the same as all the other sets that we looking at. About 1.25" is about right. Your rendition looks good, a little fine tuning maybe but it's looking good.

Much more recess than that we'll be chewing out even more of the foam support behind the grills.

I spoke to Rudy about this when he made his... I suggested a mounting boss which one would use a screw/fastener of some sort to mount the grill material. This way you can use a washer to capture your mesh of choice, but he didn't go that route.

As it stands I still have my unpainted, untouched Aftershock grills as I never did get an answer as to if I could use them on my car with racing. The answer was always, wait for the protest decision, so I did nothing with them.

I don't have a model of what is located behind the bumper cover rumor has it that that part may be available though.

How much of the foam needs to be removed with Rudy's grills?

What are the racing rules about grills like? I know with what I have drawn the grill area hasn't really changed any and should allow the same amount of air through.

Here's an illustration that Rudy posted on the BB. Too far back and the GXP folk will have issues with the intercooler I believe.

Alternately, the foam can be removed but it does provide support for the bumper cover.

The file with the foam support is on the same FTP site as the fascia was. That will tell us how much foam to remove. But there is no IC in that file.

1.5" setback on the GXP will be considerably farther back than the Aftershock ones I would think. Those ones are 1.25" back at the deepest point from the leading edge of the bumper at the bottom but because he has already brought the bottom edge of the ring out to be flush, it has brought the entire assembly out with it.

I'm concerned that anyone with a thicker than stock intercooler could have issues with a grill that far back and trimming that foam support back too much. That said, I would think it's just a click and drag of the mouse to change it at this point. The other details are likely front and center right now.

If the grills are printed, you could have custom offsets?

It's a little more then just a click and drag to change things but not a big issue to change them. We'll see what might be in the way once I get the other file added to the model.

It has been my experience with "printed" parts that they print the file you give them so if you want something changed it means you get them another file.

Have to admit I'm partial to Rudy's design of how the outermost perimeter of the recessed bezel lips sits on top of the fascia rather than sitting inside the fascia openings.

Yeah, pretty obvious from that link that Bob posted, the foam shows the indents of the regular grill's hex mesh, so zero room there for indenting without removing foam.

When they replaced my front bumper cover (after the Accident) they didn't put any of the Foam back in .The Intercooler sets far enough back, Not in the way of anything. Plus+ it gets more Air.
