It is amazing how incredibly stupid some government agencies can be. With well more than 40 states allowing the general public to pump their own gas, and have the trigger locks, you would think a safety record for such things would be well established. Totally nuts to me to not be able to pump your own gas, or lock the trigger, especially in places as cold as NY.

Jim
You might be amazed at how many people have defeated the trigger locks by wedging them open with Bic lighters, pocktknives, etc. A lot of spilled fuel and some very scary fires have been the result of those stupidly careless people.

Thank goodness Virginia lets you do both! Right guys?!

Which is exactly why they should never remove the properly working trigger locks! People are stupid, but a properly functioning pump can avoid that kind of thing.

A good day with my Sky!

First, a simple oil change, sort of.

Supplies.

Fumoto Valve, with adapter and hose.

Drain Plug.

Out with the old.

Fully drained I added the adapter.

Installed the Fumoto Valve with drain hose extension.

Close up.

Filter cover.

32mm socket and swivel.

Old and New Filter.

Snapped into the cap.

Custom made funnel. The opening is wide, but very shallow.

In place, the lip seal held it in place.

All told, about 1 hour, but next time it will be much faster.

Then a little frame stiffening:

I also installed a new DDM Backbone.

Old exhaust, right in the way.

Backbone in place.

Loose, but the exhaust held it in place. I had to remove the left muffler mounts to allow it to drop far enough to get the backbone out.

Stock versus DBM. The difference is amazing.

The captured nuts were not very well attached, but apparently enough so since I could fully tighten each bolt.

Installed. Not hard, but lots of long bolts that tend to stick a bit.

I haven't driven it but a 1/4 mile, so no report on how it works.

Install time about one hour.

Next a little suspension anti-squeaking:

I also had an issue with my front sway bar bushings squeaking, so I decided to lube them, even though I have ordered a set of urethane bushings with grease channels.

Someone had already done it before, but it is obviously not a permanent fix.

Simply unbolt the old cap and remove it and the bushing at the split.

Clean the sway bar.

Lube it up.

The bushing with old dry grease on it.

Cleaned and lubed.

Reinstalled.

I took the car around the neighborhood and hit as many bumps as I could, no squeaks.

Total time, 20 minutes.

And finally a nice rack!

Lastly, I installed my new KappaRack. It was a bit of a pain assembling the straps and getting everything lined up, but not too bad once I adjusted my trunk lid.

The only issue I had was the cheap Chinese bolts that galled once tightened down and snapped in half trying to remove them.

Obviously I was not cross threaded.

Other than that, the rack seems solid and looks decent. It will not stay on the car permanently, but only go on for trips.

Total install time, about 1 hour.

All together, with jacking the car up, using my hockey puck frame protectors, it took about 5 hours to get everything done.

All in all, a very good day!

Nice work Jim!!

if there doesn't already exist one, i would propose to copy paste the oil change in the DIY section as a topic of it's own.
if you enrich it a bit with some more details for ignorant people like me, then it will be great !!

and now the "bad" Arabas....
i don't like the rack..i know it's practical, i jut don't like it....

Thanks, normally my pictorials have more meat, but I didn't think people here really needed it. I would beef it up if people wanted. Here is an example of one of my maintenance pictorials: http://www.jimvonbaden.com/R1200_24K.html

By the look of your old filter. IMO I would change the filter sooner. It looks like is starting to collapse. Which will open the bypass valve in the filter cap. And unfiltered oil pumping threw you motor. Your old filter should be in the same "shape" as your new one.

I run my oil for 15k, but change my filter at every 5k. My old filter looks (other then being dirty) like the new filter.

That would not surprise me. I purchased the car with almost 18K miles on it 2 months ago. It has 20,300 now, so this is my first change. I usually change my oil/filter every 6K miles. The dealer claims it was changed just before I got it, but judging by the oil I would say that is not true!

Thanks,

Jim

Stainless on stainless is bad about that. Antiseize will help prevent that in the future if you are going to be removing and reinstalling .

Yeah, I was trial fitting. You wouldn't think new bolts would get half way threaded and lock up though. One of them going on never tightened, and one wouldn't back off. These really looked more like chromed than the SS bolts I am used to on motorcycles.

Lesson learned, replace with higher quality bolts!

Just gonna go out for a relaxing drive in the country today to enjoy the dry roads. Finally! Still have over 2 feet of snow on the ground piles everywhere but it has been so cold that none of it has melted yet. Looks like it will be a long white winter.

On a side note, my dog is still pissed about all the snow. It comes up to his "manhood" and he is just not having it! LOL

Today I disabled the satellite radio (no more cycling through the XM band, yay !) and the DRL.  Tried disabling OnStar by pulling fuse in the fusebox but it also disabled the keyless entry system.  Still have TPMS to disable.  I'll try removing the sensors.

POS VETT ;  Please Post what you did to XM band , and by pulling the fuse to On Star will the car still start ? Detail what wires and where you found them.
